I purchased this book as complimentary to Teaching Literacy to Learners with Dyslexia by the same authors. Together they provide good learning framework and multi sensory strategies for Key Stage Two children.

Having bought 'Teaching Literacy to Learners...' and used it frequently to plan and teach children with difficulties in literacy development, I purchased 'Assessment of Learners'. It is clearly written and concise making it an accessible reference work and supporting assessment by bridging between theory and practice. Having gained AMBDA, this book (along with the authors' first publication) are key works that I can easily refer to in my day-to-day work.

It brings together informal and formal assessment strategies, the rationale and situates the process of assessment firmly within the domain of education to support practitioners in improving outcomes for children who are struggling with literacy acquisition.

There are few books that draw together what this publication does into a single volume and 'Assessment of Learners' builds on the formula of 'Teaching Literacy to Learners': clear, accessible and informative material that offers a toolkit for qualified specialist teachers and those undertaking ATS or AMBDA courses.

The authors use their wealth of experience to produce a book that is relevant to specialist teachers and the realities of assessing learners with a view to devising teaching programmes and strategies for supporting individuals.

I got this as I wanted help in informally assessing a pupil. This has useful guidance and downloadable things to use. The book has a template for writing a report, which I found very useful. It also lists all the formal Dyslexia assessments, going through the various tests included so it allows anyone to make an informed decision about which test to buy.

Excellent book, very useful information for SpLD teachers with handy resources. It's a book I will use regularly and would recommend it to teachers and SENCos who have responsibility for pupils with dyslexia.
