Dilip is an author of at least 20 books now and every one is worth buying. This latest one I picked up and could not wait to take it to the checkout. He tells the story of the greatest RAF ace over Europe, Johnny Johnson, who started out flying in the Battle of Britain, learnt the skills needed to survive the desperate and fast combats from men like Ken Holden, then later by flying on the wing of legendary fighter pilots such as Douglas Bader, the legless ace wing commander in his section, during the sweeps of 1941. Johnny went on to become the RAF`s top European ace and top Spitfire ace. Most of his kills were against the hardest targets of fighter aircraft like the Me109 and Fw190.
Johnny had a long, hard fought war ending in the skies over Germany in 1945. He was one who led from the front, by example, shooting down around 38 German aircraft. He was a leader of men that his boys would follow anywhere and this was proven in the glorious way they described him in his This Is Your Life TV programme years later. The book is full of air combats, mostly in first hand stories and some are new as related directly to the author who became a friend of Johnny over many years untill his sad death some years ago. Dilip gets Johhny to elaborate on accounts that featured in Johnny`s own books like Wing Leader and this throws up a new perspective and is better for almost feeling like you asked the question of the great pilot yourself!
Johhny was an inspirational fighter pilot and the book is full of accounts that will stir any mans blood and make him burn the midnight candle, forgetting what time it is in the effort to finish the book!
You will read it cover to cover and not be disappointed.
Well done Dilip, yet again;A masterly telling from a Maestro.
