5.0 out of 5 stars Handy and easy to absorb, 23 May 2014

This review is from: The Essential Clinical Handbook for Common Paediatric Cases: A practical guide to assessing children in General Practice, A & E and the Paediatric ... ... (The Essential Clinical Handbook Series) (Paperback)
This book is a really useful summary as the title suggests of common Paeds cases. I found it easy to read and it really does cover a lot of what you might have to deal with in urgent care/a&e and general practice enough detail that you feel confident but without being cumbersome and dull. Yseful for junior docs, GPs and nursing professionals alike. The writing style is like the friendly and sagely paeds consultant you might call up when you're feeling in a bind and has lots of sensible tips on how to approach these common problems. Don't know if there's an electronic version out there but I'd love to be able to read on the train or have this accessible remotely in some way....

This review is from: The Essential Clinical Handbook for Common Paediatric Cases: A practical guide to assessing children in General Practice, A & E and the Paediatric ... ... (The Essential Clinical Handbook Series) (Paperback)
I bought this book as i have worked with the author and have learnt a lot from him in the past. Dr Snelson has been a great teacher to me over the past few years and its nice to see he can now reach out to a larger audience. I like the layout of this book and its easy to read without getting bogged down in too much information which wont make a difference. I do feel this book will be very useful for GP's/ A+E doctors who may want to brush up on their paediatric management. The book has plenty of adivce about when and why to refer children seen in primary care for a paediatric opinion. This is more relevant as it comes from someone who has worked on both sides.

The chapters are broken up into the usual diffferent specialities and cover a wide range of common paediatric problems. I particulary liked the gastroenterology section and note the diagrams to explain constipaion are simple ane easy to reproduce to patients/parents. I also like the examples of how to phrase things and explain things to parents about different conditions, this is a recurrent theme throughout the book, and would probably be helpful to those who struggle to explain things to parents.

Overall I would recommend this book to GPs, GP trainees and A+E doctors who have to see lots of children but havent always had the most exposure to paediatrics. I would not recommend it to Paediatric trainees studying for membership as this does not cover the bizarre, rare problems which you never see until MRCPCH!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written accessible guide to common problems in paediatrics, 9 Feb 2012
This review is from: The Essential Clinical Handbook for Common Paediatric Cases: A practical guide to assessing children in General Practice, A & E and the Paediatric ... ... (The Essential Clinical Handbook Series) (Paperback)
This is a great guide to the most frequently presenting problems in paediatrics. The author's style is very easy to read. The book is full of sound practical advice. It also, very helpfully, provides tips on how to broach difficult questions (such as non-accidental injury)in the 'what do I tell the parents?' sections. I am a final year medical student, and I would recommend this book to medical students doing paediatrics, GP and A&E, and I am sure it would be very useful for people further along in their careers as well. The book also includes useful tips on examinations etc. It might not have every paediatric condition, but it will make you a friendly, safe doctor!
