This review is from: Ithell Colquhoun: Magician Born of Nature. Revised edition. (Paperback)
Colquhoun is an important woman surrealist painter of the 20th century. She is collectable. The many modern techniques she used are described here with precision and her art is given Tate Gallery Archive (TGA) reference numbers. The ideology of surrealism drawing from Freud has important links with the magical work of the Golden Dawn Hermetic Order to which she devoted some study, leading to the important history of the Order's founder Mathers and his associates and beliefs in her collectable book "Sword of Wisdom". Her artwork is often revelatory, occasionally laugh out loud hilarious if you can handle a joke. She saw rich correspondences between nature and the human, a strong and exciting theme in her work, if unusual. Half the book is a detailed catalogue so this is a wonderful tool for an art collector. For the intellectually curious. It is reliable and written by an art expert. The illustrations are numerous and yet do not exhaust the subject, leaving me wanting even more.
