As Charteris himself said, it's not his best work. Never the less I did enjoy reading this book.to the end.

Three more stories from the early days of the Saint.

"The Story of a Dead Man" finds him turning businessman for very unorthodox reasons.

"The Impossible Crime" is, among other things, the author's offering in that favourite genre of detective fiction, the Locked Room Murder Mystery.

In "The National Debt", in the identity of Professor Rameses Smith-Smyth-Smythe (!), he takes on some 20th century pirates operating from an inn in South Wales. For those interested in such trivia, this story features the first appearance of Basher Tope, later to materialise in The Holy Terror and finally in Once More the Saint.

P.S. For a list of all Charteris's Saint books (in two sections, because of length limitations) see my Listmanias.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Saint Goes On !, 5 Jun. 2014

I just want to make a general appreciation of the fact that these wonderful books are back in print - with excellent introductions by crime writers and other enthusiasts. These books which are not sufficiently well known these days are up there with P G Wodehouse, better than James Bond and much better than almost anything else in their genre.

I know of many people who will tell you that their lives, attitudes and resilience have benefitted from an early acquaintance with Simon Templar. Well, now he's back for a new generation. The Saint Goes On !

By Leslie Charteris's own admission in the introduction he wrote to the 1945 edition of these stories, (printed in this version of Alias The Saint), this isn't the best in the Saint series.

That's an understatement. Okay, this is very early material (1931), but the three stories are woeful in terms of the Saint's character, and he comes across as totally unbelievable. The prose style holds up pretty well compared with other popular fiction of the time, and Charteris is clearly finding his way as a storyteller, but there really isn't much to commend this volume in the series. Breezy enough to get through pretty quickly, that, at least, is one saving grace here.
