5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling tour de force
"The Silence of the Sea" features an intriguing opening chapter: a luxury yacht arrives at its destination, but no-one is onboard. What happened to the crew and the passengers? And could there be an underlying reason or reasons for their disappearance?

Scandinavian crime fiction seems to dominate the publishing world at present and, although the...

its a bit too incredible and loses its way after about 1/3 way through, there is a red herring early on which never materialises which is annoying, lawyer thinks she sees child legs hiding under bed but doesn't confirm it, dismisses as mind games, this device is used twice to no effect.

Also if you are not Icelandic the names are difficult but that is some of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Boring and long drawn out., 8 Mar. 2014
I can't seem to get on with this author. The story is ok but it takes forever ~ a saga indeed. Characters were too "other" for me, highlighted by names which were likewise.

I am a fan of this author but was disappointed with this. Too long and too obvious,no characterisation or continuity

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting idea but not quite realised, 3 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The premise of this novel - an empty luxury yacht whose crew, which includes a young family, has disappeared - is well established. However, there are just too many elements which are irritating. The husband / father of the family is implausibly stupid and his wife not well enough drawn as a character. What drama there is comes directly from people behaving in ways which do not make sense - there is so much splitting up and coming in and out that it feels like a French farce or an episode of Scooby Doo and the plot gets bogged down in the minutiae of this coming and going and the stodginess of the present / past structure, which now appears obligatory in all thrillers. We get lots of information about the secretary, who appears to be a recurring character, and her love of eBay, which serves no purpose whatsoever and which I can only assume is a dig at someone known to the author. When it eventually comes, the resolution is very quick and strangely unsatisfactory. It's a Scandi-thriller, but demonstrates only that the Scandinavians can write a duff thriller, just like the rest of the world.

My first experience with this Icelandic writer. A good if rather gruesome story of an investigation into how a yacht seized by a bank after the Icelandic financial collapse turned up with nobody on board. What happened to them all? The solution is clever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Complex and unusual series, 28 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
With it's unusual setting in Iceland and a sympathetic lawyer in Thora, investigating a very complicated series of tragic events aboard an abandoned yacht, this is a very absorbing crime thriller. Would definitely like to read more in the series.

This review is from: The Silence of the Sea (Paperback)
This well plotted tense thriller again features the highly likable Reykjavik lawyer,
Thora Gudmundsdottir.
When a very expensive yacht collides with a Reykjavik harbour wall, with no person
on board,Thora is hired to investigate the whereabouts of the missing family (father ,
mother and two female twin girls) with a view to claiming the large life insurance.
The novel is told in two parts.Thora and the police investigation ,is juxtaposed with
the scary events on the yacht, before it ends up peopleless.
This is a readable novel full of suspense, and with a very moving denouement.
My only caveat is that some of the dialogue did not add to the novel ,and could have
been edited.

Great read - I'm still at it. I bought it for a friend who enjoyed it so much that she gave it back to me as soon as she finished it and now she wants more of this author's books. Makes it easy for her Christmas presents.....

2.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous implausible story, 20 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ridiculous implausible story. No depth to any characters, so you really don't care what happens to any of them. The writing is quite laborious. The worst Scandinavian 'thriller' I have read in a lomg long while.

4.0 out of 5 stars shame about the end, 31 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Quite good but the end was a it unsatisfactory. It was as if the author had got fed up and wanted to finish the book as soon as possible. A shame because the beginning was really gripping.

2.0 out of 5 stars Icelandic thriller, 28 Jan. 2015

Didn't like it much. Writing not the best though I realise it's a translation. Story exciting in parts but denouement suddenly done. I wouldn't read another by this author.
