As a parent of a National 5 student, I find these new qualifications confusing. This explains the place of writing in the National 5 curriculum in a way that is easy for parents and students to understand. Students are gently guided through the various options open to them and given clear direction and exemplification regarding genre and technique. The tone is just right - helpful without being patronising- and enjoyable to read. My daughter says that she feels more confident about trying out different approaches to writing now and that can only be a good thing!

This is an excellent text book, firmly focused on the Writing Portfolio- and tells young people, parents and teachers all they need to know about this important area of the new Nat 5 qualification. Written in a style which is very accessible to pupils sitting Nat 5, it will also be an invaluable resource for teachers, planning work for their classes. Lots of practical advice, helpful hints how to avoid pitfalls (eg over-reliance on internet sources) and links to websites- will keep the young people interested. Also gives examples of how to tackle different writing challenges, accompanied by helpful explanations. This will inform and help- but not intimidate!

Thank Heavens for Willie McGuire. Curriculum for Excellence can be a confusing beast for the professionals as much as for the students sitting the related National Exams in 2014. Mr McGuire uses his extensive SQA experience to bring a real weight to this book - it's crammed full of things students will need to complete the writing portfolio element but it never feels too much - the illustrations and text hit just the right note. I have a feeling this will very quickly become essential for Teachers, Students and Parents alike. You won't be disappointed in this purchase - Finally Comma Splice, explained.
Worth every penny.

A very attractive and engaging textbook for SQA National 5 English folio work.

Lucid, well-illustrated, and pitched appropriately at the target pupil market.

A valuable roadmap for teachers entering the unknown and uncharted territory of SQA National 5 English folio work.

This book is OK but for better value I would recommend the National 4&5 textbook by Jane Cooper (Hodder Gibson) which contains writing folio section and all other aspects of the course.
