4.0 out of 5 stars A Useful Resource, Pitched at an Appropriate Level
Far superior to much of the National 5 English stuff out there. And, given that it's written by a very experienced member of the SQA examining team, it's actually reliable. Gives a really clear insight as to how marks can be gained in the examination. Could do with a bit more on the Scottish Texts section though, as it only covers two of the specified authors...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not complete course notes as suggested
There is a lot to commend in this book - as the other reviewer suggests it does attempt to make sense of the course. It's not worth its five star rating however as, for example, there is nothing in the book about listening and talking apart from the briefest mention on p.5. There is a lot to commend in this book - as the other reviewer suggests it does attempt to make sense of the course. It's not worth its five star rating however as, for example, there is nothing in the book about listening and talking apart from the briefest mention on p.5. The book is not as the cover claims "complete course notes". This book targets passing the exam - rather than the whole course. This might be the book a student turns to between prelims and the exam when the writing folio is in and the talk assessments are over and the time has come to look for ways of raising your grade. Much better in my view is the Bright Red Study Guide by Dr Christopher Nicol which takes a far better integrated and holistic approach to the whole course. This book is complete with glossaries, technical term explanations, exemplars, clear folio guidance etc ... and seems somehow much more up to date in its layout and presentation. Buy both, but if you only have money for one - then buy the Bright Red one. There's good online support from Bright Red as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to Pass Nat 5 English - David Swinney, 5 Oct 2013
This review is from: How to Pass National 5 English (How to Pass - National 5 Level) (Paperback)
A textbook of the highest standard, this guide to all elements of Nat 5 will prove invaluable for pupils, parents and teachers. It demystifies and clarifies the new qualification, making it not only manageable but enjoyably challenging. Written in a readable, no-nonsense style which will appeal to young people, it breaks down the elements of Nat 5 into a series of straightforward steps. Particularly helpful section on the new Scottish text part of the course, providing detailed information and practical advice on how to approach this area of study. Excellent book!
