5.0 out of 5 stars Intuitive, gradual, enjoyable and empowering
Note that "Total Portuguese" and Perfect Portuguese" concern the language spoken in Portugal only. There is a reference at the end to Brazilian Portuguese, but it's only passing by.
I shall say from the start that I am in the process of completing "Total Portuguese" which is an excellent introduction to the Portuguese from Portugal. In the "Perfect Portuguese"...

1.0 out of 5 stars Duplication of Advanced Portuguese
I agree with the American reviewer who pointed out that this was basically the same as Advanced Portuguese. I bought it from Amazon but had to return it for that reason.I am very disappointed in Michel Thomas is simply repackaging old wine in new bottles. What I am waiting for is the Masterclass in Portuguese.

In the "Perfect Portuguese" course, there are 4 discs - half of the "Total Portuguese" one. There is still meat on the bone, so to speak, but it is a reduction, making the course more expensive than "Total Portuguese". However, still very valuable.
I've heard somewhere the criticism that the course is explained in English. I think it would be very naïve to say one can learn everything in Portuguese without any explanation in English, even at an advanced stage.
The lessons are given to two students, one struggling more than the other. The mistakes are there to point to difficulties.
Virginia Catmur, form Briançon, France, studied Portuguese at Oxford's and at Lisbon's university. She is intuitive, leads the learner deeper by accumulating more words to repeat about one particular point. That is indeed the essence of language knowledge, as you learn how to build a sentence which becomes more and more complex to represent the day to day language.
"Perfect Portuguese" underlines the postulate that to know the verbs of a language is to know the language. First, there is a review of the present tense for several verbs. I like how she classifies verbs, either track -ar verbs, or track non -ar verbs. Then you have the -nh verbs ( por, ponho; ter, tenho; vir, venho). Then there are the -zer verbs or from their first present singular endings, the -ço, -go verbs (fazer, faço; trazer, trago, dizer, digo) she goes deeply into the different conjugations.
She then devotes several tracks to the perfect tense, again examining the idiosyncrasies of the different categories of verbs.
She explains the subjunctive. She mentions the term subjunctive, but rather than make you remember what the different tenses are, she leads you in the usage of them, like a child would start to use. The pattern is: "in Portuguese to express an action that is going to happen you say ...(she gives the example and how to build that particular verb; how to sandwich the pronoun between the infinitive and the endings) Then she says, "How would you say ..." the course is built on this, how would you say. You learn how to say, how to find the right ending, where to place the pronoun. And yes, at the end, you really know it.
I really recommend this method for a good knowledge of Portuguese, and how to learn more after using this method.

I've already used the Michel Thomas Polish. I find this approach really suits me especially alongside more traditional grammar books.
