Although this book is very comprehensive, I think that it would have been improved by including pronunciation guides as well as translations, at least in the earlier chapters, and use of the accompanying CD is therefore a necessity. I was surprised that the lessons move quickly on to explanations of Ukrainian grammar quite early in the book, but it seems necessary to learn these aspects if one is to understand how the language works and to progress further. In my opinion one needs a lot of time and much patience to progress through the book, but in the end it will be well worth the effort.

As with most other language courses it seems, initial audio examples are given from the start at full speed and with little or no repetition. Many sounds are unfamiliar to our ears and no allowance or consideration is given for this. "Complete Ukrainian" falls at the first hurdle for someone wanting to learn enough basic Ukrainian to give them confidence to talk to locals on what may be a one and only visit. This is a course for those who already have a basic knowledge of Ukrainian and I doubt was ever tested by someone with no knowledge before going to print.
