Rathbone and Bruce churned out fourteen films and about two hundred radio broadcasts such as these but their professionalism and consistency of performance virtually never wavered. The quality of the stories (on any of the three volumes) is occasionally variable but there are no 'duds' and they're never less than enjoyable.
The dated feel is part of the experience and the annoying 'Petri Wine' ads can simply be skipped through.
I listen to them in the car, where their clear and brisk plotting is ideal.

Classic old radio shows. Probably that's all that needs to be said. Boucher and Green can be a bit variable in the quality of the stories - but then so would anyone having to produce to a weekly schedule - and we all know that Rathbone and Bruce are not 'pure' Holmes and Watson, but for atmosphere and a good old yarn, these stories really are worth listening to. Yes, the logic of the story development can be a bit odd, and Bruce's Watson really is too much of a dimwit. But do we really care? Like the earlier volumes, the stories seem to be a little mixed in terms of sequencing (and are later in the run, as far as I can tell). But none of this really matters. Sound reproduction is pretty good. It's Rathbone and Bruce, and it's Holmes and Watson. Sit back, close your eyes and it's another world.

I bought this series expecting the same outstanding quality of storyline, production and acting enjoyed in the immaculate films. To say that I was disappointed on the first two points is an understatement. The acting is as good as ever, although Bruce does tend to mumble incoherently at times. The storylines are weak and the production is annoying. The longer storylines and accessible clues of the films are displaced by extremely short episodes, few decent clues and 'surprise' solutions. The guilty party can sometimes be identified with ridiculous ease by a process of elimination from the sparse number of characters, rather than Holmesian logic. As for the quality of production, we should accept that tastes have changed, but 'dramatic' bursts of organ music and endlessly repeated wine adverts could surely be edited out completely to spare the cringing and annoyance of a modern audience.

Following on from previous volumes, these stories from the USA Radio days are superb, and I hope more will follow.
Very good price, especially when compared to when I first bought these on cassette back in the 90's at £7.99 for 2-stories.
Quick delivery also.
