An excellent book about a fascinating man. Merton was not just a monk but a wonderful human being - aware of his faults, he was truly fully alive and burnt with a passion for God. This book is wonderfully realistic about a man, who even as a monk found aspects of the institutional church difficult , but bears witness to a deeply authentic spirituality. He must at times have been difficult to live with in the monastery - but this too is recognised. A wonderful book, well written, which will remain on my shelves for many years.
