3.0 out of 5 stars Mainly photos of finished work
It didn't go into much detail, so not all that helpful.
Consists mainly of photos of finished work, but ok for the price.

Although this is a wide and varied book in its content it lacks really in the detail of the 50 projects as a beginner i find there is not enough instructions on the techniques required in each step of the demonstrations some feature only 3 steps not enough to describe the paintings. Some of the demonstrations are very simplistic in there final finished paintings and look very amateurish.

This 267 page book is a mine of useful information and illustrations. The beginning section covers drawing and painting materials acrylics and oils. There's a page on types of brush stroke and creating backgrounds and tips on gathering reference material such as photographs.

Many species are included:cats- short haired, kitten, longhair and Siamese. Dogs-Dalmation, mixed breed, Yorky, and Retriever. Horses: Thoroughbred, Shetland, foal, paint horse (Skewbald), draft horse (Cob/shire), Appaloosa, thoroughbred foal, Lipizzaner stallion, Arabian filly, Friesian. Various cattle, chicks, ducks, pig, cockerel, rabits, squirrels, foxes, racoons, ferrets, otters, deer, chipmunk, bear, elephant, giraffe, zebra lemur and exotic birds, parrot and peacock.

Each picture has a reference photo with the final picture looking close to the photo rather than being used as a source of inspiration. Pictures are either acrylic, oil or pencil and are built up in 4 to 6 stages the first being a line drawing/outline. Each stage has comprehensive notes. The omissions from the photos are reasonable- omitting the cage around a rabbit or a complex background with some simple shading. A squirrel in a tree is show with a hint of tree which improves the photos where the squirrel is almost lost to the back ground.

The author is highly skilled and to a beginner the step up from some stages to the next could seem a little daunting, however for some pictures stopping at stage 2 would give a very nice sketch. With some practice the more complex stages could be attempted.

Overall a very nice book highly recommended to budding animal artists.
