5.0 out of 5 stars More Tea, Vicar?, 30 Aug 2013

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Steampunk Tea Party: Cakes & Toffees to Jams & Teas - 30 Neo-Victorian Steampunk Recipes from Far-Flung Galaxies, Underwater Worlds & Airborne Excursions (Paperback)
The latest sumptuous outing by Emilly Ladybird has stepped away from the jewellery- and accessory-making of her first two books, and moved onto that other steampunk obsession: food, and more particularly - cake.

Gorgeously photographed by Martin Soulstealer, with layout and graphic design by Terry Lightfoot, this book is as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the stomach. So much so, in fact, that if you are planning on trying out the recipes contained within, I'd recommend copying them out onto scrap paper first to save your book from any unfortunate kitchen catastrophes.

Focussing mainly on cake and sweet treats, there are a variety of recipes suitable for all skill levels, from the straightforward Magical Fruit Scones to the more involved and time consuming Sherpa's Chestnuts and Gin & Tonic Cake. Some require some specialist equipment or unusual supplies, but there is a brief supply section at the back of the book, along with conversion charts for the weights and measures and cooking temperatures. And if sugary confections are not your thing, there are also several savoury options, including a couple of very interesting chutney recipes.

As with Steampunk Emporium and Steampunk Apothecary, the making sections are organised by various themes and linked by short stories, making this as much a work of fiction as a cookery book. There are some recurring organisations and characters, but you don't actually need to have read either of the previous books to enjoy this one.

Even if you have no idea what steampunk is, if you're looking for an interesting twist on cake-making and a beautiful coffee-table book, you would be hard-pressed to find such a fun one elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, 19 Oct 2013
I have just received my copy of the Steampunk Tea party and it is possibly the most beautiful recipe book I've come across. Not only are the delicacies sumptuous but the presentation is delightfully luxurious with inspiring colourful photos and Ms Ladybird's story captions are just huge fun. I love the characters and the glamorous adventerous family feel and my word does the food look delicious. I really recommend this book in either your tea party or Steampunk collection.

This is refreshing and different, not your everyday Tea Party food. A perfect conversation starter if left on your coffee table. Beautifully illustrated. The photography is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cakes to the max!, 12 April 2014
This review is from: Steampunk Tea Party: Cakes & Toffees to Jams & Teas - 30 Neo-Victorian Steampunk Recipes from Far-Flung Galaxies, Underwater Worlds & Airborne Excursions (Paperback)
I was given this book as a Mother's Day gift, and read it cover to cover twice - not what I'd expect to do with a cookery book! It's such a fun read, I love the little steampunk narratives that introduce each set of recipes, and the photos are fabulous. I'd never heard of push pop cakes before but as soon as I saw the photos I knew I *had* to make them, so my first act (when I put the book down) was to order syringes from ebay (I've since discovered they're also available here on amazon). So far I've made the stripey syringe push pops (absolutely delicious, the ganache icing is gorgeous), tipsy turvey teabread (twice!) and the time traveler's tart. The recipes are easy to follow and have all worked perfectly. Somehow I think the family will need no persuasion to come round for tea more frequently! Many thanks - this book is going to be enjoyed again and again.
