I bought this book because I have the (excellent) previous edition which deals with Unity version 3. I am now using Unity 4, and I was having trouble following the old Unity 3 book as a lot has changed in 4. Unfortunately this latest edition of the book, which is supposed to cover Unity 4, still refers to things from Unity 3 which have disappeared in Unity 4. For example, the Terrain menu. This means it is still tricky to follow the steps. If the author is going to update the book, it needs to be done more carefully.

You can't see whats in the Pictures and every 5 pages or so fall out of the book in my copy. This is an awful print, cannot recomment this version.

Also, thought the material was i C#, its in java. But that one is on me, i proberly did not reseach enough before i bought it.

I have only read about 150 pages, and can say that the book is well written, but the quality of the material is awfull.

I'm only in the beginning chapters of the book so bear this in mind however I do have some initial impressions. First of all there's nothing wrong with the content, it's very comprehensive and assumes you have no knowledge so clearly runs you through each step and explains what you need to know. The book is thick enough to knock out a donkey but that's mainly down to all the images, screenshots and step-by-step guides.

The biggest issue is the low quality of the greyscale print which makes it quite difficult to appreciate many of the screenshots and images. For instance, there's a page illustrating the various anti-aliasing effects available, none of which are clear enough to really know what the difference is. If this book were in colour I'd rate it much higher. Take note publishers, saving money by using poor ink printed on toilet paper results in fewer sales.

Another issue I had was more of personal preference. The book focuses mainly on being able to create an adventure game, a genre I have little interest in. The author also seem to have a dislike of the FPS genre since there have been a few points made about it's shortcomings over adventure titles. However, since a beginner probably shouldn't be attempting an FPS and an adventure game utilizes skills that can be applied across whatever game you're interested in it's not a problem.

UPDATE:

It's worth noting that this book uses javascript, or more accurately a flavour of it called unityscript. It's my own fault for not realising this before buying as I was after something with C#. All of that is irrelevant now though as I just couldn't get motivated with this book so have bought one from the 'sams teach yourself in 24 hours' range to replace it. Instantly it is so much better to follow, and in full colour on high quality pages.
