3.0 out of 5 stars Needs a bit more polish, 20 Mar 2013
This review is from: Pro Spring 3 (Expert's Voice in Spring) (Paperback)
Don't get me wrong -- the book is quite useful. However I wished it could have expanded a bit more on the new annotation-based configuration concepts such as @EnableWebMvc. A few chapters in and I still had some trouble trying to understand how things are wired with each other, and this comes from a person with 2 years experience writing XML-configurated Spring MVC web apps. To add insult to injury, the rest of the chapters build upon the assumption you know annotation-based configs like the back of your hand AND Spring's own reference documentation does not cover them (as of time of writing).

All in all, this book covers most of the Spring MVC aspects quite ok - some of the concepts are explained good and the complimentary examples (which you can import and try them out) are beneficial to get your hands dirty.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy on a Kindle, but it has to depth., 26 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Pro Spring 3 (Kindle Edition)
Bought via my Kindle and to be honest it's not a great buy for this format (which is why i gave it 3 stars). There is not enough contrast on the graphics to make them really readable and the code examples are too big for the screen. If you do buy it in Kindle format it is best to view it on a device with more screen space and colour capabilities. I used the kindle app for the PC.

The book is very detailed and walks though the main aspect of Spring. I think it will take a few reads and a few projects etc. before I get a better understanding, but I have no doubt this will be a good reference book.

On the downside the books starts buy introducing a sample application in chapter 3 that you expect to be the basis for the examples and explanations in subsequent chapters, but it's not fully fleshed out until chapter 21 and only has a 1-2 page reference at the end of most chapters. I kept asking "yes that's very interesting but when are you going to show me how this relates to the sample application".

Still very detailed and the book will be used.
