2.0 out of 5 stars This book is just a mess, 12 Feb 2014
This review is from: Practical Load Balancing: Ride the Performance Tiger (Expert's Voice in Networking) (Paperback)
If you know enough about the subject matter to have found this book, you probably know a reasonable amount about Linux, operating systems and the internet. The problem with this book is that it has no idea of what audience it's aiming for. It's written with huge amounts of waffle about fundamental basic concepts that anybody who has found the book will already know about. It's just space filler material. The first 100 pages or so are totally useless and the rest isn't much better.

If you're deploying a load balancer probably the most important decision if whether you're going to deploy a layer 4 or layer 7 load balancer, so you'd think that the book would spend a lot of time discussing the pros and cons of each. Unfortunately it doesn't even mention this.

The book only really covers LVS (IPVS) which is a layer 4 load balancer without explaining why the author has chosen this. It fails to discuss whether Direct Routing, NAT or tunnelling is the best setup.

The MySQL section is questionable at best, it recommends MySQL Cluster which is an entirely different beast from the stock MySQL server which the vast majority of people use, but fails to explain what the differences are, what challenges you may encounter, or even why the book is covering MySQL Cluster.

The book just smacks of someone that's read the documentation, installed the software on their home PC and decided to write a book about it without having any real world experience of the subject matter.
