For a while now i have been looking at writing a CMS in .NET, but the majority of .NET books out there either did not cover the specifics or were written quite poorly.
Now people that know me, know i hate reading and in all honesty i would rather wait for the movie. Well i guess this one wont get made into a movie so i decided to take the plunge and actually read it! Well i was quite surprised for the first time in what must be 10 years, i had a book that kept me reading. At one point i was still up at 4 am, i just could not put it down!!
So yes in my opinion it is a great book.
Any way, the book covers the building a CMS framework in ASP.NET 4, i guess you worked that out due to the title of the book! I found it to be very well written and covers the basics. The Author leaves quite a bit for you to do and expand yourself which IMHO is great as it helps you learn rather than just copy everything word for word.
I would say i was a medium skill level .NET developer before reading this, but still learning. Upon reading this book i felt that i learnt quite a lot (not quiet expert yet though), but i would happily recommend this for novices, even though the Author says its best suited to experienced people i still feel novices could learn quite a bit with the accompanying source code.
At the end of the day if your going to buy one ASP.NET book this year, get this one!! It not only covers building a CMS, it also allows you to build on your ASP.NET knowledge along with other languages too! Not to mention building a CMS is a great way to learn how .NET works!
