A fascinating book, more torture porn than philosophy but still very enjoyable. I was certainly hooked by the first hundred and fifty days, but as I came to find out, the Marquis left the book unfinished, though he wanted to return to it at a later date. The note format of the following 450 days absolutely killed the pacing for me, and the main characters undergo little further development.

It sounds like I'm being negative, but I'm really not. There's a lot to enjoy here, whether it's the catalogue of fetishes, de Sade's friendly and upbeat narration, or the absolute despicableness of the four heroes. It's an extreme book and certainly won't bore you, even if it horrifies you. If only de Sade had finished it then it would be a masterpiece. Taken as it is, it's still great. Highly recommended.

disturbing reading, someone said it was on the list of 100 books to read befoer you die... there are some chapters where the latter option is more pleasing.. I haven't finished it. not sure if I can

Hard hitting and raw, not for the faint hearted, definitely writing that aims to push limits - but let us be clear, this is not for everyone, and there were many times in which I clenched and whinch for a hard hitting read at times - painful and lust - horror and disgust - fantasy and intrusive, but it is the way of Marquis de Sade.

ok if youre worried this wont have an ending because its not finished it does. however after the first...about 70% it is no longer a story. it just becomes a list of things that happened, like literally with bullet points and then a short paragraph on what everyone did about it. i personally couldnt read it i just skipped to the end but the first part of it i really loved. i agree with past reviews it is kind of gross but if you just dont picture it of if your mind is like mine and only pictures everyone as above a certain age it loses a lot of its sting. i bought it out of curiosity and while i cant see the link between this and modern day sadism its still a pretty good read. and yes the language is awkward but you do get used to it pretty quickly just give it a little time

I wanted to read this book as it is something of a classic....I found it an amusing read.
Something to pick up now and again when on a train perhaps to fill in those minutes or hours when your imagination can run wild.
