This review is from: Ponyo on the Cliff, The Art of (Ponyo on the Cliff By the Sea) (Paperback)
This book contains concept art for the Ponyo film, a film which I haven't yet seen and for which I excitedly await the DVD release!

Although I've not had the pleasure of viewing the film, this book has wetted my appetite and I feel as though I know the film well now - not just the basic plot, but the energy and the ideas behind it. I now know the efforts behind creating the sea, and I use the word 'create' deliberately - the sea in Ponyo isn't just a mass of water, it is an entity with a soul and Hayao Mayazaki himself immersed himself in the project to utilise his incredible imagination in bringing it to life.

Animation is dismissed by many as a lower form of entertainment but this book will serve to educate those nay-sayers and assist them in realising that many anime features are incredible examples of art in their own right.

The book contains several interviews with key players from the film, including Katsuyo Kondo (Supervising Director) and Noboru Yoshida (Art Director) and of course there's a feature from the great man himself - Hayao Mayazaki. The most fantastic aspect of this book though are the illustrations, the images from the film are vivid and the concept art are beautiful sketches and watercolours.

There's also a full script of the film (in English!) at the end of the film, so you can feel free to act out the scenes yourself!

In a nutshell: A large book which isn't stuffed full of filler material - it's all good! If you've not seen the film then this book isn't going to spoil anything, it will probably enable you to appreciate the film even more as you'll already have a sense of the ideas behind what you're watching. If you have seen the film already then this serves to further develop not just the story, but whole concept of the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another stunning art book from Miyazaki, 20 Oct 2009
This review is from: Ponyo on the Cliff, The Art of (Ponyo on the Cliff By the Sea) (Paperback)
Having seen the Japanese version of Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, I had no hesitation in adding this art book to my collection! As with all Ghibli art books, it is full of some stunning early concept sketches (most of which are by Miyazaki himself), as well as character designs and final backdrops from the movie. The back-to-basics art style of Ponyo is simply beautiful, and puts the rigidness of certain American 3D animated movies to shame! And although it's not a hardback like the rest in my Studio Ghibli "Art of..." collection, it does come in a jacket which can be removed to reveal an elegant plain white cover.

Highly recommended for any fans of Hayao Miyazaki's work!
