...and unfortunately, I didn't. If you like chunky, thick/thin, slubby wools and wide tape yarns, have *very* little time and a brand new baby to knit for, then this is brilliant. I was bought this book as a gift as I've just had a baby, so have actually read (some of) it, but I am not tempted to make any of the patterns as they aren't to my taste. I'm afraid to say, (particularly as this was a gift and it makes me seem really ungrateful), I find them a tad hideous.

The patterns are, on the whole, on the easy side with 8 simple hats, 6 baby cocoons and 6 variations on baby blankets. Some of the blankets are quite nice in my opinion, eg the pinwheel blanket looks okay, but I personally wouldn't use the bulky yarn used to make it. There is a hexagonal blanket with a triangle attached to one of the corners to form a hood that is alright. And I was almost tempted to like a nursing cocoon which appears (in the photo) to have a short poncho-like top part with a cocoon for the baby to fit in attached to the bottom. But on further reading, it's just a rectangle at the top with a cocoon attached at the base - not innovative at all. Finally, the yarns used are all unusual American ones, with Blue Sky Alpacas being the most well known and easiest to get in the UK (ie not very easy). So you'd have to be confident with yarn substitution.

In short, this was not the book for me, so I will probably give it away as soon as it is polite to do so. There was an upside to the book, though - the photographs in it of adorable sleeping newborns in hand knits are numerous and delightful - to my mind, reminiscent of Anne Geddes. So if you like that kind of thing, I could almost recommend you purchase the book just for the pictures!

really enjoyed this book. Not only are the patterns different and innovative, but they also spurred me on to create some patterns of my own
