5.0 out of 5 stars Come-uppance for Fanny Price
As a pastiche of Jane Austen's style, this beats P.D. James's similar attempt hollow. And it's much more fun to have had Austen's characters given twists in their family relationships, rather than ploddingly carried on as they were. As a detective story, it's thoroughly satisfying, taking into account how much more difficult the process of detection was before...

1.0 out of 5 stars If Lynn Shepherd cares about writing she should stop doing it!
Or so she tells JK Rowling. Who has inspired a generation (or two) to lift their heads from their i-pods/smart phones and actually read books. I actually haven't read Lynn Shepherd. But she hadn't read JK Rowling. She just suffers from sour grapes. I won't be reading such a small-minded petty author now however. NO WAY!!! Plenty of other choice out there from authors who...

And it's much more fun to have had Austen's characters given twists in their family relationships, rather than ploddingly carried on as they were. As a detective story, it's thoroughly satisfying, taking into account how much more difficult the process of detection was before fingerprinting, blood analysis, and so on. I thought the "thief taker" whom the family hire a convincing character. I look forward to reading Lynn Shepherd's other reworkings of classical 19th century novels.

But she hadn't read JK Rowling. She just suffers from sour grapes. I won't be reading such a small-minded petty author now however. NO WAY!!! Plenty of other choice out there from authors who don't think literature is to stop OTHERS writing out of jealousy! How such small-minded pettiness could translate into good writing of a epic variety I very much doubt. So I won't bother with your books, Lynn. Grow up!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Petty and smalled minded, 26 Feb 2014

A PhD in English eh? Well there’s the proof to the old saying those who cannot do, teach. I haven’t read the book but I have read Dr. Shepherd’s piece in the Huffington Post where she displayed herself as petty, small minded and jealous of others’ success. She says it’s ok to judge an author without reading her words, so the fact I *have* read her Huffington essay more than qualifies me to see her as not worth the time.

One does wonder exactly how she acquired her PhD with this view of books and other authors though.
