If there is one book I think everyone should have at home and read cover to cover it is this one. The First Aid Manual is not only a reference for the public on first aid but forms the core syllabus of the training given to first aiders from each of the three voluntary aid societies (The British Red Cross, St Andrews First Aid and St John Ambulance). If you receive treatment from a first aider at a public event, this will be the book that trained the volunteers treating you. It's also used in many First Aid at Work courses as their primary reference.

The 2014 update has changes for management of unconscious casualties, use of anaphylaxis auto injectors, management of head injuries, treatment of hypoglycaemia, pelvic injuries, choking in children and infant seizures among others. If you perform first aid as part of your job, as a volunteer or want to provide the best care to your family then its definitely worth updating as this is not an expensive manual.

The manual is very easy to use with clear pictures, diagrams and flow charts showing you the procedure to follow in an emergency. Whilst reading through it is advised (particularly for CPR, unconscious casualties, choking and severe bleeding where you have less time to react), it's an easy reference to follow when you need it and should help keep you calm as you go through the step by step procedures.

I'd also recommend attending a basic first aid course as practice on some techniques such as CPR and the recovery position is the best way to learn. All three voluntary aid societies offer courses, many for free or very low cost.

I had the 8th edition of this book and wanted to get the very latest version before going on a first aid course. This version is laid out in a much better way. It's far more logical/clear and the contents/index system is designed to quickly access the page you're after in an emergency.

A must have for every home.

As per previous editions, the tenth edition came just in time to resolve some issues. Clearly written and illustrated, a perfect way to remember and refresh points learnt from a first aid course.

The latest version of the first aid manual is a must have.

Clearly laid out with good images to assist this book is useful for those who want to learn first aid (although an approved first aid course with hands-on experience is best of all) through to those who have had first aid training (at whatever level) and who need a quick reminder / refresher.

Version Ten of the book also includes latest best practice, the most important change being how to deal with a choking infant, so even owners of previous versions would benefit from the upgraded version. Indeed the only minor criticism of the book is there is not a section at the front pointing out changes from the earlier versions of the book.

In my view this book is not only essential for all trained first aiders but it is a book which should be in every home and place of work.

Good Manual, well written and logically thought out and presented. Information clear and of sufficient depth. Additions of what to do in case of helicopter landing and traffic accidents etc. makes this a comprehensive manual.

Clear instructions on first aid. I read this book prior to my first aid course. It helped to refresh my memory from being a first aid at work member some 20 years ago. The information in this book helped me remember everything. I passed my recent first aid course with flying colours!! I'd recommend this book to everyone, very useful.

Everyone should have one of these in their house. Gives info which can save a life but also background information, detailed diagrams of the skeleton and the names of the bones and muscles. Useful for an emergency but also if you want to learn a bit more about the parts of the body.
