5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
The day this wonderful book arrived I listened to a discussion on Radio 4 about the future of publishing where one of the participants concluded that paper book publishers should focus on producing beautiful books. This is a beautiful book. Well worth £40, a big book, robustly engineered and full of exquisite drawings and well written and compelling narratives. John...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but...
Perhaps expectations were unreasonably high and the book was a little disappointing. Would have appreciated more of the very good illustrations.

This is a beautiful book. Well worth £40, a big book, robustly engineered and full of exquisite drawings and well written and compelling narratives. John Evelyn would have been proud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book of the Year, 5 May 2014

In the same way that Richard Mabey's "Flora Britannica" and Mark Cocker's "Birds and People" were such obvious choices for book of the year, surely Hemery and Simblet's magnificent production "The New Sylva" is similarly a shoo-in for such an award. A truly wonderful publication. Absolutely brilliant. And what a superb riposte to the dreary world of eBooks. A stunner.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm sure the artist wouldn't have been happy with this mutilation, 17 Nov. 2014
This review is from: The New Sylva: A Discourse of Forest and Orchard Trees for the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover)
This is a magnificently produced book. It is more suitable for someone whose knowledge of trees is already extensive but the quality of the writing and illustrations would make it a welcome Christmas present for any naturalist whatever their specialism. I have just one criticism: a number of the illustrations are spread over two pages with the result that they are distorted in the centre, it not being possible to lay the pages completely flat without serious damage to the spine. This ruins the dignity of the illustrations and in fact makes some look slightly silly (eg. the oak on pages 208-9). I'm sure the artist wouldn't have been happy with this mutilation. Providing fold-outs for the larger illustrations is one solution that the publisher could have considered.

An excellent book for those interested in trees and artwork. The colour of the paper tends to diffuse the quality of the illustrations which in real life are so much clearer.
Thoroughly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Tree Books in years, 14 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The New Sylva: A Discourse of Forest and Orchard Trees for the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover)
This book has been long awaited, a combination of digestible text, written in a informative way, outlining details which include specie history, uses and common traits, without the lack of personality often delivered in a guide. The book is a real achievement for author, publishing team.
The drawings are exquisite, real masterpieces.
This book is a must for any naturalists.

Book was a present for my sister-in-law's 70th birthday. She is a tree lover and was overwhelmed with all the information and fantastic illustrations. It is an impressive very large book and highly recommended in the BBC Countryfile December '14 magazine.

This is a stunning book. Filled with superb illustrations and information. This is a book for tree lovers, clearly created by tree lovers. Based on the original John Evelyn Sylva, and going so much further....I treasure this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding new book on trees, 28 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The New Sylva: A Discourse of Forest and Orchard Trees for the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully produced book, with exquisite drawings and elegant typography (drawing on John Evelyn's original). My only qualification is that the writing, while well expressed and informative, is slightly arch. It affects a formality that comes across as lacking passion, or depth of feeling, for the subject. Writing about the introduction of potentially deadly ash disease, for example, the style is rather matter-of-fact. For great writing about trees, Hugh Johnson is still the master, followed by Oliver Packham (what a great recent little book on the ash!) and the late Alan Mitchell. Nevertheless, the New Sylva is a triumph for the publisher in every way.
