Dalrymple tells the tragic story of our invasion to plant a puppet king in Afganistan. A shocking outcome amid barbaric cruelty. Its almost hard to believe the tale as it unfolds. More than a century later the russians faced similar horrors and eventually got out far from intact. That we and our allies are still deeply engaged in Afghanistan shows how little history has taught us. Won't our politicians ever learn ?

Reads like an epic adventure knowledge. Well researched and presented . Fascinating array of quotes and references. Hard to believe this is a true story. You get a good feel for the characters and also the location , considering all this took place over 170 years ago , underlines how good the writing is. It puts a lot of the recent events in Afghanistan into context. A must read for any British PM !

This is not for the faint hearted. It helps if you know something of the history of the region, or have read any of Dalrymple's other books on India. Very thoroughly researched, and shows what a mess the British made of the war they waged in Afghanistan. The book is packed with excellent descriptions of the country, and the author gives a clear portrait of the people involved.
