2.0 out of 5 stars simplistic and feeble
Not recommended if you know anything about the subject. It is billed as a primer and that should be taken literally. Influenced by the favourable reviews, I decided to try it, but found it feeble and simplistic. The choice of churches is distinctly odd. The illustrations are unattractive: all line drawings with colour-wash, and the lines are often wonky for no good reason...

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect companion for any church visitor, 29 July 2013
This review is from: Rice's Church Primer (Hardcover)
Britain's churches are some of the most iconic and beautiful buildings in the country, and they have so much to to tell us about history, art and society - if only one knows how to `read' them. Matthew Rice shares his knowledge with what he calls "an introduction to the language of church architecture - the grammar of basic components that reappear again and again, and the vocabulary of features from particular periods".

His succinct and easy-to-follow text is accompanied by his elegant and charming illustrations of architectural styles and details.

He guides the reader through the differences between curvilinear and reticulated tracery, and how to tell a groin vault from a lierne vault; shows the changes in church architecture from the solid Norman style through Decorated splendour to semi-abstract Modernism; and picks out the best churches to visit in each region.

"The parish church is a dependable reward for visitors today," Matthew concludes, "and any church that you visit is likely to be astonishingly beautiful."

This book is the perfect companion for any church visitor.

Well, at least its architecture is laid bare. Outstanding book...both text and pictures. Well worth reading. Rice writes well and with great humour.

This is a fascinating book. The illustrations are successful and very easy to remember when visiting churches. The work involved must have taken years to produce this book but is presented in such a delightful way. I have bought a copy to give to a friend as a present and willprobably do thesame with other friends. Great.

I love Rice's primers. Having bought the architecture primer, couldn't resist this one too. The main elements are reduced as far as possible to an easily assimilated group of essential facts.

lovely pen and ink and pencil drawings showing the tiny details you miss in a church. there is some text, but mostly the book has page after page of annotated drawings in a very informal style pointing out things to see and styles of church architecture. almost permanently on loan from my local library so i bought a copy!
