In truth I bought this as I was to see David Tennant and Catherine Tate in the London production of the play, and needed to listen to it first to try to understand the language of Shakespeare (it's been a long time since I was at school!). I loved it, it was easy to listen to and not difficult to understand. Excellent purchase, and it has now become a souvenir of sorts of a wonderful evening in the theatre. I certainly recommend listening to Shakespeare rather than trying to read it before going to see it.
This 2 cd set of Much Ado is of the BBC radio version broadcast in 2001. The stars are David Tennant as Benedick and Samantha Spiro as Beatrice. Other well known actors featured are Emilia Fox, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Julian Rhind-Tutt.
It is an excellent production and the verbal exchanges bewteen Benedick and Beatrice, two people determined to remain single, are ably performed. A trick played on them by Claudio and Hero, lovers soon to be married whereby Benedick and Beatrice overhear conversations saying Benedick loves Beatrice and vice versa. This, of course, is part of the trick to bring them together.
A wicked Don John is determined to prevent the marriage of Claudio and Hero.
How all is resolved is a masterpiece of storytelling with all the right ingredients of love, jealousy and honour.
A worthwhile listen to bring Shakespeare to a wider audience and foster appreciation of his work.
