4.0 out of 5 stars It's TORCHWOOD on the telephone!, 19 Aug. 2009
This review is from: "Torchwood": The Dead Line (BBC Audio) (Audio CD)
In-between series 2 and series 3 ("Children of Earth") of TORCHWOOD on television, BBC Radio 4 broadcast four audio dramatizations of the series using the voice talents of the remaining cast members John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness), Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) and Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto Jones). The first, "Lost Souls" was broadcast in 2008 (as part of "Big Bang" day to coincide with the official opening of the Cern Large Hadron Collider). Then, on consecutive weekdays (the week before "Torchwood: Children of Earth" was broadcast on TV) came the other three plays of which this, "The Dead Line" was the last - not that you need to listen to "Asylum" or "Golden Age" to appreciate this episode as they do not form a linked trilogy.

The three surviving members of the original TORCHWOOD team are involved in a spooky little tale of alien infiltration of the telephone system that has its roots in the long hot summer of 1976 which leads to another encounter with an old flame of Captain Jack's and some fun nostalgic references. Jack is actually sidelined for quite a lot of the story which ultimately means more central and significant roles for both Gwen's husband Rhys (Kai Owen) and Ianto Jones.

Actually, it's Ianto who has the most memorable role in this story as he waits in hospital and reflects on the significance of his place in the immortal life of Captain Jack Harkness. As events unfolded in the subsequent TV series, this all gains a certain significance and is appropriately memorable and poignant. All-in-all a quite thought provoking and entertaining three-quarters of an hour in the company of the familiar characters from the TV show.

This episode follows "Asylum" and "Golden Age" to complete the 2009 threesome of TORCHWOOD audio dramas, and there are no bonus features on the CD, just the 45 minute radio play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phoning home, 28 Aug. 2009
This review is from: "Torchwood": The Dead Line (BBC Audio) (Audio CD)
Having loved the TV series THe Torchwood Audio productions were a natural choice for me. This is a full cast recording and even though shorter than a TV episode holds attention from the start to the last.

For those who miss the old style phone sounds; this is an episode that should not be missed. But be warned - the calls received are dangerous to the health of the recipients.

We even get to meet a former girlfriend/close friend of Jack's who plays a part in helping to solve the cause of so may people falling into coma's.

I would recommend this to all Torchwood fans and also to those who just love a good mystery. This is a good stand alone episode, complete in itself.

This Torchwood full-cast audio adventure set in 2009 begins in fine style, with one of Jack’s many old flames being tracked-down by Gwen in order to assist the team. The reason? Jack is in a coma, and it seems that this time he really might die…
This time it’s telephones that are causing the problem in Cardiff – something has come through the rift that is causing people to receive unexpected phone calls that result in their falling into comas; Gwen and Ianto have to track down the source of the problem before the whole of Cardiff falls under the spell of the mysterious electrical virus, and with their charismatic leader out of the game, time is not on their side…
Ultimately this sags in the middle, with an awful extended scene featuring Ianto declaring his love for the Captain whilst Jack lies unconscious in a hospital bed. The threat wilts away, and everyone gets home in time for tea. Torchwood by numbers I’m afraid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, 13 Jun. 2012
This review is from: "Torchwood": The Dead Line (BBC Audio) (Audio CD)
I can't spend all day watching dvds of Torchwood, but I certainly can listen to the bbc audios. The whole tv cast is involved in this story set in Cardiff and the story catches the imagination right from the start. It's a single stand alone story.

I think this is the best of the Torchwood audiobooks/radio plays out there so far. The plot, the twists, Rhys working with Gwen, someone from Jack's past, and Jack and Ianto talking but not really... It's got it all!
