Read the book ages ago, BIL is a huge JlC fan but hadn't read this one, so bought for his birthday.

Arrived promptly and in pristine condition. BIL = very happy.

Enjoyed reading this book based on post WWII spycraft. Well written and good description of Smiley as a character. Plot quite intricate and encouraged me to keep on reading

This is a chance to see La Carre develop the back story of Smiley and gives the first sighting of Mengle, one of the minor charecters who later comes up in TinkerTaylor.

A dour cold-war drama that introduces George Smiley. Disappointing to a reader who came to the master spy - and his creator - through Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Excellent start to the Smiley series. A must read to set the background for a lot of his later work. Short and to the point. Scenario still valid today.

An excellent book, that just tempts you into wanting more of Smiley, and a time when the pace of life in London was not so hectic but just as mysterious.

whilst this is not JLC's best outing it is, nevertheless, a taut and thrilling venture into the often seedy world of the Cold War at its height.

Published 52 years ago. Excellent - his professionalism makes other writers seem like amateurs.
He makes you want to read more and more.
