Though heavily orientated to the American user this book is a tour de force in common sense. It deals primarily with the component parts, moves on to servicing then most usefully deals with realistic 'troubleshooting' with excellent yet simple diagnostic testing. The approach is designed to allow the amateur to ascertain the fault then judge whether or not it's within...

3.0 out of 5 stars A difficult read
I found this manual frustrating to read in that it does not follow a logical sequence of the essentials of maintenance (e.g. oil / repellant change, flushing) followed perhaps by more complex work (e.g. ignition coil / flywheel testing).

Though heavily orientated to the American user this book is a tour de force in common sense. It deals primarily with the component parts, moves on to servicing then most usefully deals with realistic 'troubleshooting' with excellent yet simple diagnostic testing. The approach is designed to allow the amateur to ascertain the fault then judge whether or not it's within his/her capabilities. Cuts out an awful lot of "Manufacturer manual repitition" or waffle. This book I'd say though expensive and small is well worth it and I'd recomend it to anyone who needs to keep an outboard running and performing well.Top marks Ed!!

I found this manual frustrating to read in that it does not follow a logical sequence of the essentials of maintenance (e.g. oil / repellant change, flushing) followed perhaps by more complex work (e.g. ignition coil / flywheel testing).
All of the maintenance and repair instuctions come with the qualification that the machine model manual must be consulted : i.e. what is the point of this manual if it has to be checked against the manufacturers manual and why would you buy this manual if you could afford the expensive manufacturers manaual?
The manual also failed to warn that most manuafacturers insist that work on certain components needs to be done by authorised agents to preserve warranty. Examples of such include; valve clearances, driveshaft spine lubrication, impeller replacement,
For much of the more complex work, additional tools are needed such as ohmneters etc and it is unlikely that the owner of an outboard would find it makes economic sense to purchase such equipment for the unlikely event of its being used (assuming one could master the techniques involved).
The manual had some obvious shortcomings such as:
it did not identify the normal lubrication / grease points,
it did not explain propeller replacement,
did not describe how the lanyard stop switch works and checking,
lacked advice on storage including the need to drain for freezing temperatures.
In summary, I feel this manual is inadequate and is a waste of money. Better to spend the extra to purchase a manufacturers manual unless there is a more comprehensive manual around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginner/intermediate mechanics & outboard owners, 18 Jun 2010

Firstly, this is not a replacement for an owners manual, so if you have a specific job to do on a specific outboard, this book might disappoint. However, if you are an owner of an outboard and you wish to better understand how it works, how all it's subsystems work and how to look after it then this is an excellent resource.

Even if, like me, you aren't comfortable with major mechanical works there's a lot to be said for trying the basic acts of troubleshooting on an engine before taking it to a dealer. If you can drop off your outboard and reel off a list of troubleshooting steps that you've been through it will save them time and they'll probably be less likely to rip you off!

Poor quality with inadequate illustrations. Photos are unclear and in Black & White only. I am returning it and have selected an alternative book.

I bought this book hoping for some help with my non-functioning tilt switch and sender unit. There is a chapter which includes references to the item, but then suggests you contact your dealer. I found the solution on the US Honda Outboard Forum. It's a useful little book, but it lacks some vital, basic information.
