4.0 out of 5 stars Typical Terry Deary wit presents the HORRIBLE HISTORY of OXFORD in a child appealing way, 28 Feb. 2007
`It might be famous for its super spires and clever colleges, but Oxford has seen some horrendous happenings.
Read on for burning bishops and blood-soaked streets, student scraps and Civil War strife!
Want to know:-
what a liripoop is?
which potty professor liked to walk like a dinosaur
what's buried beneath the botanical gardens?

Plot your path to the past with the frightful fold-out map of the city - take a punt past corpse-ridden Christ Church and go skeleton-spotting at the cruel and crumbling castle.
History has never been so horrible!'

96 packed pages, split over 13 chapters:-

Oxford's twisted timeline
Saints & skeletons
Vicious Vikings
Curious colleges
Burning bishops
The savage Civil War
Cutting up corpses
Quaint quiz
Savage students
College criminals
Ghastly goings-on
Awful for animals
Oxford dead

with an introduction and an epilogue.

Written in various fonts with humorous black and white illustrations/cartoons throughout, which are sure to draw the most reluctant eye!

5.0 out of 5 stars From a child's perspective..., 12 April 2010
This review is from: Gruesome Guides: Oxford (Horrible Histories) (Paperback)
This reveiw was written by my 9 year old grand-daughter as she was enjoying the book so much!

This book is a very funny book. It has good pictures and some funny jokes and you learnt lots about the history of Oxford that you wouldn't know. I think that grown ups might like it as well as children because it has lots of good facts. It was like a grown up version of a Horrible History and was a bit more factual.

Well this book was excellent, just like many of the 'Horrible Histories' series. It contained loads of interesting facts and stories that stick in your mind and impress people when you tell them about the history of your city!

5.0 out of 5 stars fun book series, 30 Jan. 2013

This review is from: Gruesome Guides: Oxford (Horrible Histories) (Paperback)
I like the series, they are funny and tell some of the lesser told parts of history.
One have to remember that they are written for 10-15 year old-ish.
the author have said that it is difficult not to write something wrong, because the first constants used to be considered the truth, but by the time the rest of the book had been written, those truths had been disproved.
Also a good theme in the books is that you shouldn't always believe what a historian have written, because the winner writes the history.
