5.0 out of 5 stars History at its best!, 27 May 2011
This review is from: Trenches Horrible Histories Handbooks (Paperback)
Horrible Histories are well known for gory stories, fascinating facts and illustrious illustrations and i am pleased to say this dose not disappoint! Pictures are made better from original books with brilliant colouring; and i love the fact that it has the opinions and information from both sides (unlike usual one sided books). Only down side is the same for all HH handbooks and that s the amount of recycled material from the normal books but still a super buy!

Those books, handbooks & activity books are superb !!!! Our son (8) has been reading them for the last 18 months - the first one was "the awesome egyptians" - but since has moved on to the specials (countries), the cities & back to history stories with WWI WWII
I think it suits the early readers & the adults as well. The language & grammar are good too !
Educational, historical, funny, gruesome... it's perfect !

...my eight year old LOVES this book. The whole series of Horrible Histories books is funny as well as educational, but this one is the best in my son's opinion and, therefore, in mine too! He has taken it to school every day since Christmas so that the other boys in his class can look at it too. Typically, the funniest joke in it is deemed to be the one about tanks called Little Willy. No accounting for taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars fun book series, 30 Jan 2013

This review is from: Trenches Horrible Histories Handbooks (Paperback)
I like the series, they are funny and tell some of the lesser told parts of history.
One have to remember that they are written for 10-15 year old-ish.
the author have said that it is difficult not to write something wrong, because the first constants used to be considered the truth, but by the time the rest of the book had been written, those truths had been disproved.
Also a good theme in the books is that you shouldn't always believe what a historian have written, because the winner writes the history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating, interesting and original, 6 Dec 2011
This review is from: Trenches Horrible Histories Handbooks (Paperback)
Like all other 'Horrible Histories' books, this handbook presents an interesting and truthful account of World War I, making full use of colour engage younger readers. Terry Deary includes fascinating facts that are not in most history books and presents them in original ways, e. g. through the brilliant cartoons of Martin Brown. Perhaps the only down side is the amount of text reproduced from the original 'Frightful First World War' book, although the addition of colour to the book and some new material accounts for this.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 28 April 2010

This review is from: Trenches Horrible Histories Handbooks (Paperback)
I bought this for my 10 year old, who has a passion for Horrible Histories, especially the 'Handbooks'. He loved this book, requesting it off the back of visiting the Horrible Histories WW1 Exhibition at the War Museum (well worth a visit). His collection of HH Handbooks go everywhere with him: holidays, school, trips etc. This is a fab addition to the series. Excellent value, making history and education fun and interesting - appealing to the young reader with the gorey gruesome bits they WANT to read about. My son, not known for his ability to sit still and concentrate, with while away the hours with these books.
