Oh, this books deserves to be more famous, especially since it has been around since 1974. We were given it as a birthday present. What on earth is this odd thing, we thought. On first reading, the kids weren't so sure. On the second reading, we all started to like it. Now its been read umpteen times, and everyone in the family (aged 4 - 44) is a fan. Quentin Blake's wonky artwork works brilliantly with Russell Hoban's loopy story. It really is a treat for all. P.S. There's even a sequel.

Long live Captain Najork and his hired sportsmen!

Truly brilliant, I'm so glad that this has been reprinted!
All kids deserve to hear how Tom (a boy who likes to fool around) uses his skills in fooling around to defeat the formidable Captain Najork at Womble, Muck and Sneedball.

One of the funniest and most original children's books ever written. All that and Quentin Blake. My children adored it. Now it is back in print I shall buy one for every child I know.

A terrific story line and fine illustrations. This is not a new story -a favourite with my children, now being read to the next generation and being received with the same enthusiasm.
