This book is spectacular. I read it to my nine year old (who's well into reading her own novels by now) and we both were moved to tears -- not a regular occurrence in this household. Max Eilenberg's retelling of the classic tale is dark and emotional and very moving, and Angela Barrett's illustrations are nothing short of breathtaking. Can't recommend this highly enough for 6-10s. So different from all the jazzy tongue in cheek 'aren't we cool' books out there. This is the real thing.

I read this to my 5 year old, we were spellbound by the fantastic pictures. In particular the two page painted picture of the beasts palace. Every page holds beautifully illustrated pictures with a dark quality that just grabs your attention. I found it difficult to contain my emotion within the story because it is so movingly written, in the end I just wept!! My daughter and I looked at each other with tears in our eyes and of course then laughed! but we had both been caught in the magic. What an amazing book the best version of Beauty and the Beast I have read an absolute pleasure to read again and again and thankfully nothing like the Disney version!

A beautiful book that combines a unique twist on the well known story. Beautifully image led by magical and mysterious illustrations with a dark but charming edge by Angela Barrett. This version of Beauty and the Beast is unforgettable, a modern day classic that I can imagine being a favourite for decades to come. Add it to your collection.

Have read this out loud to my 5-year-old daughter. It's quite long, so it took us almost a week in instalments, but she loved it, and always remembered what page we'd got up to.

The story is relocated to the Victorian period, with its use of costumes and hairstyles and even a little reference to photography. There are the most lovely and poignant illustrations on every page.

The prose has that Oscar Wilde richness, gives all the characters names (the sisters are called Hermione and Gertrude, and the father is Mr Fortune), and there is a very lavish description of Beauty's life in the palace, including a sewing room, a painting room, and a monkey room! - we both quite fancied moving in there ourselves!

Without being preachy or sentimental, the story also made its point about looking beneath the surface of a person.

I haven't seen this sort of fairy tale published in decades, in fact, I thought they went out of fashion after World War I. We've got the other four books in the series, and more please!

I had the most wonderful time with my daughter reading this book, it was a 7th year birthday present. So many fairy tales are just soul-less retellings, but this is not. This is all the magic you want, and all the feeling that you never want the story to end. The pictures are really unusual too and just add to the beauty of the book.

Buy the book, and read it together for a wonderful shared experience!

I bought this book Christmas just gone. Although I do not have young children to share this with (not my own anyway), I have always liked fairy tales myself. When I saw this, I really couldn't resist it. Today, I finally came round to reading it, and I enjoyed every moment. As another has already said, the pictures are absolutely stunning. The doubel page spread of the Beast's palace is one of my favourites too. But I also love the ones of the Beast and Mr Fortune in the Beast's rose garden, as well as Beauty and the Beast in the snow, at the end. The story is sweet without being too simple.
I will certainly treasure this book. Hopefully, I will be able to share it with my friend's daughter when she is a little older.

I can't begin to describe how beautiful this book is. I use it with my year 2 class and they are as enchanted as I am.

So many treasures in this adaptation. Love the depiction of the beast and his lonely presence as Beauty enjoys the castle. There is a lot of subtle humour in this book which adds to the overall enjoyment.
