Could do better.
on 21 August 2009
You get eight episodes of the Goon Show but this includes two versions of "1985" which only differ in having John Snagge do some Big Brother announcements in the latter. It does include the version of "The dreaded batter pudding hurler of Bexhill-on-sea" where Spike is absent ill and Peter Sellers manfully takes on his parts and a recording of a programme called "The lid off the BBC" from 1955 which examines the use of sound effects in the Goon Show. Unfortunately, the sound quality is so poor in places it is virtually unlistenable. The sound quality throughout the CDs is variable. Also, I assume due to copyright, there is no "China story" episode, only a pdf of the script which is hardly compensation.
This boxset is really for fanatics and completists like me and those who wish to encourage the BBC to continue to issue as much of the Goon Show in chronological order as possible. I do hope they continue to do so but hope for better quality next time.
