You get eight episodes of the Goon Show but this includes two versions of "1985" which only differ in having John Snagge do some Big Brother announcements in the latter. It does include the version of "The dreaded batter pudding hurler of Bexhill-on-sea" where Spike is absent ill and Peter Sellers manfully takes on his parts and a recording of a programme called "The lid off the BBC" from 1955 which examines the use of sound effects in the Goon Show. Unfortunately, the sound quality is so poor in places it is virtually unlistenable. The sound quality throughout the CDs is variable. Also, I assume due to copyright, there is no "China story" episode, only a pdf of the script which is hardly compensation.

This boxset is really for fanatics and completists like me and those who wish to encourage the BBC to continue to issue as much of the Goon Show in chronological order as possible. I do hope they continue to do so but hope for better quality next time.

Finally. The BBC has decided to take its crown jewels and give them the treatment they deserve. Following from the excellent series of collectors editions of `Round The Horne' and `Navy Lark', the show we have all been waiting for is, at last, being restored, given some interesting extras and released in a definitive, comprehensive edition. Ladies and Gentlemen, it's the highly esteemed Goon Show!

The BBC only holds recordings from the beginning of series 5 onwards. Some series 4 episodes exist, but due to licensing problems I don't hold out any hope for these episodes appearing anytime soon. Series 1-3 are, sadly, totally lost to us. Hence, this definitive collection begins with series five, and aims to release all extant recordings the BBC still hold from all subsequent series.

If you're looking here you don't need to e told how good the humour is, so I will just review the release itself. Volume 2 collects the last 12 episodes from series 5, an unbroadcast recording of the `dreaded batter pudding hurler' in which Peter Sellers plays all Spike Milligan's parts as well as his own, an introduction to `the sinking of Westminster Pier' by co-author Eric Sykes, a contemporary look at the recording of the Goon show and a contemporary critical review. China Story is still sadly missing, and present only as a script in PDF form. The remastering is worthy of especial praise. In the main these episodes sound much better than they have in any other release. Much material has been restored, unfortunately this often comes from poor quality sources, so these restored sections sound quite bad. The restored snippets add much to the shows though. I'm very impressed with the overall quality. This really will be the definitive collection when finished.

This release contains 7 CDs, with two episodes per disc. These are collected into two 4 CD jewel cases, encased in a flimsy cardboard outer. There are two booklets, one in each case, with essays, details for each episode and original Radio Times listings. There are also 4 postcards with Spike Milligan cartoons of some of the main characters.

Episodes are:-

Ye Bandit of Sherwood Forest
Nineteen Eighty-five
The Case of the Missinf Heir
Under Two Floorboards
The Missing Scroll
Nineteen Eighty-five (remake)
The Sinking Of Westminster Pier
The Fire Ball Of Milton Street

Eric Sykes Introduction to `The Sinking Of Westminster Pier'

The Six Ingots of Leadenhall Street
The White Box of Great Bardfield
The End

The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill On Sea
The Lid Off The BBC
The Critics

This really is as good as it gets. 5 stars for the episodes, and 5 for the quality of the release. Well done BBC, keep them coming!

At last, the release of many previously unavailable Goon Show episodes. I'd been able to obtain some of these on LP or cassette previously, but hesitated to purchase again when they started being released on CD. This compendium; however, was another matter. I've been able to listen to many previously unheard (by me) episodes and pick up some additional information besides. Without The Goons there would have been no great British comedy - just imagine no Monty Python. Thank you, BBC for releasing these CDs so that those too young to remember The Goons can hear what truly great and inspired comedy they were able to create!

Much as these shows are appreciated, particularly in the order they were broadcast. It is strange that there are two versions of 1985 but no "China Story" from the fifth series.

I have always been a fan of the 'Goon Show' having worked as a member of a film crew on one that included Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe, and Peter Sellers, prior to them forming their radio series! The C.D.'s of the Goon Show are a wonderful medium to re-enjoy the fun factor of the 1950's
