4.0 out of 5 stars Similar content to 'The Practical Astronomer' by DK, 13 Mar. 2015

A lot of this DK book is included in the DK book 'The Practical Astronomer' which is currently £5 more expensive and is a full hardback version. My interest is in selecting a constellation and working through the highlights each encompasses to minimise telescope movement during an evenings viewing. Compared to 'TPA', this book has the constellation printed slightly larger and brighter so they are easier to see and read the M and NGC numbers etc. (which could be important in red light outside if you haven't prepared a separate target list for the evening). Offsetting that though, this book lacks the 'key stars' details and other main items of interest that 'TPA' lists very clearly for each constellation. The latter also has approximately double the text for most of the constellations and goes into more detail, so I suggest that that book is more likely to last you as you spend further time practicing astronomy.

Where this book is better in my opinion is that each constellation is accompanied by a world map which at a glance tells you whether you are able to see it from your location (both include the maximum North and South latitudes for full viewing of each constellation though) and indicates what period of the year the constellation is high in the sky at 22.00 at UK latitudes.

Both books seem to have exactly the same lists of sky items of interest in sensible topic lists, so if you'd rather target open clusters for example, both books will tell you which constellation to search for your chosen 'target'. Overall, a very good book for someone starting out in astronomy, but in the long term, spending slightly more on 'The Practical Astronomer' would be my suggestion.

I started with the Patrick Moore Observers guide to astronomy ( 1962 - still in use) and there have been many changes in the past 50+ years - not least with viewing equipment and scientific discoveries about the stars and the planets.
DK guides tend to be very good on pictures and illustrations - this one really makes the subject come alive although care is needed when viewing some of the pictures which you will NOT see through anything less than powerful amateur or professional telescopes or using time lapes photographs. These technologies are all introduced .. As many modern astronomical books tend to do this I have not penalised this one.
Starting with a Universe overview the book covers " viewing with binoculars and telescopes , the heavens views by month ( charts - showing stares and planets position up to 2019) , planets , asteroids , meteors , constellations.
There will be more detailed books but this is a great starter for anyone getting a flavour of a fascinating study , hobby and technical profession.
For all ( reading) ages....

Very good, class loved sharing it and reading about stars the text was well set out and interesting. The photos and diagrams are super. Sometimes you haven't got 20. Words to write for a review and just to star it would actually be enough
