3.0 out of 5 stars 5* for the beginner but only 3* for the experienced cook
If you're just starting out and want to get the basics right then this book is an absolute winner for you. The recipes are simple, methods are clearly laid out, ingredients are easy to source, and easy to handle, and you'll gain some useful practical skills if you follow the directions. There's plenty of content, lots of illustrations and the whole concept of the book is...

1.0 out of 5 stars Shame on you!, 11 Dec. 2012
By
T. Haslam - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook (Hardcover)
Including a recipe for shark in your book is a disgrace. No modern cookbook should contain recipes for shark or other threatened species (such as swordfish, which is also included in this book). The last thing the oceans need is lots more people asking their fishmonger or supermarket to stock these fish. Overfishing is killing the planet.

With all thats going on at the moment (Taiji dolphin and whale slaughter, whale sharks being slaughtered in India), the last thing people need is to be encouraged to think that eating animals such as sharks, etc is acceptable!

Why not add a dolphin or whale dish next time? Very disappointing!

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook (Hardcover)
The cookery book by mary berry is one of the best ones I have used.
I had previously borrowed a copy to try a particular recipe but realised
that there were many others in the book which would be worth trying.
Since buying the book I have tried several dishes with 100% success.
Well worth the price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disgusted, 11 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook (Hardcover)
Having a recipe for "shark and tropical salsa" in your book is disgusting. No cookbook in this day and age should promote ANY cooking whatsoever with shark meat.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor, 11 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook (Hardcover)
I am shocked and saddened that this book has even reached the market considering it advocates the use of fish that are highly endangered. Maybe the publisher and writer should think twice about what they publish in future.

1.0 out of 5 stars Endangered species recipies, 11 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook (Hardcover)
Cook books with recipes for endangered species should not still be being published in the 21st century. Many species of sharks are on the brink of extinction and some may have already passed the point of no return. Making money from their demise, even in ignorance should not be supported. Please do not buy this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars consumers bite back!, 11 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook (Hardcover)
It has been heartening recently to see normal people being able to affect how companies manage their brands. Take for example the furor over Starbucks, Amazon and Google - people are now voting with their purchasing power against brands that take no account of the effect they have.

This book deserves to be boycotted in the same manner - any book in the UK that promotes shark as a food needs to think again. When you remove the top predator from the sea it will end up with an uneven balance in the populations of other species. Imagine tiger steaks on a menu!

Please remove and reprint if that is what it takes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mary - Very Dissapointing - you should know better, 11 Dec. 2012
This review is from: Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook (Hardcover)
When will people learn? It is just not acceptable for any modern cook book to have recipes using Shark and Swordfish or other types of threatened fish. The last thing the marine environment needs is 1000s more people asking their fishmonger for shark and swordfish all because Mary Berry thinks its okay, well it's not, so please don't support this kind of devastation to the marine environment.
Instead of paying money for the book donate the money to Bite-Back Shark & Marine Conservation - A Non-Profit Organisation
Bite-Back is a UK registered charity that operates with a mission to halt the trade and consumption of vulnerable fish species, promote sustainable fishing, protect ocean habitats and inspire worldwide respect for the marine environment. Thankyou

1.0 out of 5 stars I love Mary Berry, but..., 11 Dec. 2012

...no modern cookbook should include recipes for endangered species like shark and threatened species like swordfish. In this day & age, it is not acceptable and both the author & publisher really should know better. Mary Berry, I am so disappointed in you. I have always thought you were generally pretty fabulous (& I adore GBBO!), but I cannot condone this latest example of profiteering from the all too rapid extinction of a beautiful species. So disappointed.

TO ANYONE READING THESE REVIEWS : PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK AND SUPPORT THE SLAUGHTER OF ENDANGERED & THREATENED SPECIES.
