This book does have a fascinating variety of weapons and they do include many terms for parts, but they are covering the entire history of weapons. So the Stone Age gets 2 pages, the rest of pre-Medieval history - 22, and the Medieval period - 40. After that, the page spread is descent while the period lengths get shorter. It does have an index so you can find all the axe examples at one time, but the axe terminology, for example, is a bit limited. They do not discuss the difference between horns and beards, they show an axe with a 'wrap-around' or 'rounded' pole, but do not give the name for that type of pole. They mention that the Vikings had three types of axes, but name only one, the bearded axe, although to my understanding, they are showing a horned axe, not a bearded axe. They do not even distinguish how paleolithic weapons differ from Mesolithic and Neolithic weapons. The book is definitely worth 10 pounds, but it does have limitations for older periods. Perhaps it has limitations for more recent periods as well, but I deal with those much and so cannot say.

This is an excellent book which covers weaponry and armour throughout history, arranged chronologically and by category. It has an especially good introductory chapter in which terminology and technology is explained, along with 'showcases' of particular weapons with their accessories, and even spreads on notable warriors that wielded them. All in all, I would recommend this to those with a casual interest through to the experts - something for everyone here.

Well my son loves it!! He reckons he will be a weaponology expert (is there such a thing?) when he's older so studies it intently. A big heavy book, good value.

Nicely presented with lovely photographs but a little light on actual information, especially on usage. A bit of a coffee-table book but for all that very nice and quite useful.

This book is mostly about hand weapons, which is okay for hand weapons but not much good for any other type of weapon, so I feel the title is misleading.
