Weighing in at 2.35 lbs (1,065 g) this book of 800+ pages is the ultimate guide to India. Well illustrated and informative, but pages aren't very well laid out with too much crammed into each page. Font is very small and I struggle to actually read it even with my reading glasses. I compared it to the Lonely Planet Guide and the local bookshop and have now bought that instead as pages are less busy and much easier to read.

Weighing in at 2.35 lbs (1,065 g) this book of 800+ pages is the ultimate guide to India. It contains beautifully illustrated pages on history, art and architecture, food, religions, flora, fauna, and even marine life. Photography is nothing short of stunning and the amount of detail absolutely impressive. Maps, cutaways and illustrations are true masterpieces and the book's current price on Amazon is a steal for the amount of painstaking work it contains. I'm leaving for India in 2 weeks and I need to decide which of my three guidebooks to take. While this one is easily the heaviest, it's also the most comprehensive and I feel I can't possibly leave without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars just right for the first time visitor, 9 Jan 2013

Bought as a gift for someone making their first trip to India. I did a lot of research to match the style of of guide book to the recipient and this one was exactly right for someone on an organised tour who is not going to require lots of info about accomodation and / or restaurants, and is more about the sights and supporting history of the places that they will be visiting,

Very detailed book in interesting chapters, from history to modern day life, religion, and information about various areas. Well illustrated, as with all Eye Witness books, and easy to follow. Not a book to use if you want to find specific places to stay etc, but great for gaining a background into the place and for planning a trip and route etc overall.

Off to India later this year. Great for checking out the places I wish to visit, and helpful info about the country and what to expect. And the price is fantastic - I bought two books on India for recommended price on one - the other was the Rough guide. This one scores on the illustrations, though the Rough Guide has more detail and text.

I bought this in preparation of a forth-coming trip some months ago. This is a well-wriiiten, brilliantly-detailed guide which gives you all the information you could need, and some !!! I had visited India quite some years ago and felt I needed more up to date information. The DK certainly delivers.

As usual, the Eyewitness guides get it just right. Excellent maps, good clear descriptions, well put together in sensible sections and fully up to date information about everything. If you are going to India, you have to have this guide whatever else you may decide to get. it is a heavy book - its only disadvantage - but you can read it up before you go if you can't face carrying it. You could even cut it up and take the bits you want - it is such a good guide it would be worth doing!

Very good guide book but far too heavy to carry round everyday - the most weighty thing in my luggage.
