It's a nice laid out book, which gives you about 900 (according to the book) of the most commonly found plant an animal species. So it gives a good slice of wildlife in Britain, for general day to day in your garden or out exploring. It's not quite a pocket guide because it's a little bit to heavy for that, but fit's easily in to a bag and dosn't take up any room. Nice colour picture's, with a nice scale drawing reference guide (ps not in full size, it has a hand, person, thumb and other birds for reference), other symbols like sex of animals or if a planet is poisonous and a nice distribution map for europe. It also gives you a small bit about habitats and identifying the various wildlife. There is a little glossary for reference. As I said the wildlife has a good range so if you want to look at everything wildlife for your bag or a for one section of the wildlife with a reference to other wildlife this is perfect.

Grandson loved it because it arrived before he went home from staying with us. He lost his bet!

While hardly a pocket book or an in depth coverage of wildlife it is a very comprehensive and excellent book covering some areas that are omitted from some similar books.
It is divided into 8 sections plus some supporting information the 8 sections are:-
* Trees
* Wild Flowers and other Plants
* Fungi and Lichen
* Mammals
* Birds
* Reptiles and Amphibians
* Fish
* Invertebrates
Each entry has a number of photographs and an information box giving abbreviated information which together with the photographs is useful for quick identification. The section on Fungi also tells how poisonous or not various Fungi are although having seen how similar poisonous and edible varieties are I would not be brave enough to use this book to collect Fungi for eating.

So agree with Peter. Expensive, pretty book, but useless for identifying anything. Within the themes of plan / animal etc, there is no patterm no system, to help you find things. Items are not arraged by colour, habitat, size, in alphabetical order or anything else I can detect. Useless, impulse purchase because it was a DK book - I should've looked closer.
