This review is from: Variationist Sociolinguistics: Change, Observation, Interpretation (Language in Society) (Paperback)
Variationist Sociolinguistics offers a comprehensive overview of the subject illustrated through first hand research and seminal works. The engaging style, use of examples plus helpful mini-quizzes means you can track your understanding as you go. I particularly liked the structure of the book, starting with the theoretical foundations, through detailed methodology with the final chapters organized in terms of variable types e.g. phonological, morphosyntactic etc.

I read the book as a PhD student and I found the book's balance between theory and methodology invaluable. The book is especially useful to those students who are starting out on their own research as it provides step-by-step methodology guides. These take you all the way through designing your sample, conducting your fieldwork, picking and analyzing your variables to finally interpreting your results.

Despite the strong emphasis on research methods the text is accessible for students and researchers at a variety of stages. Undergraduates will find it a thorough yet accessible introduction to the subject while it will no doubt provide a solid teaching aid to those instructing Sociolinguistics - five stars!
