5.0 out of 5 stars Readings in philosophy, 3 Dec 2012

This review is from: Western Philosophy: An Anthology (Blackwell Philosophy Anthologies) (Paperback)
Western Philosophy: An anthology, edited by John Cottingham, Blackwell, Publishing, 1996, 656 ff

This is an extremely useful volume for any undergraduate in philosophy or for others interested in pursuing the subject seriously. The title tells the reader exactly what to expect: it is a collection of extracts taken from the writings of the world's greatest philosophers, starting with the works of the ancient Greeks and going right through to works published in the 20th century. All the key figures are here, together with several that I had never heard of before. The volume editor is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Reading in the UK. There are 10 subject headings under which the writings are considered, some of which must be of interest to any philosopher and all of which cover aspects relevant to a university study of the subject: Knowledge and Certainty; Being and Beauty; Mind and Body; The Self and Freedom; God and Religion; Science and Method; Morality and the Good Life; Problems in Ethics; Authority and the State; Beauty and Art. There are specimen questions at the end of each chapter such as might be set in undergraduate examinations. There are also suggestions for further reading around the subject discussed. There are very short biographies of the philosophers whose works are considered, and a detailed Index.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really useful, 3 Mar 2012

I was obliged to purchase this book as a companion to an introductory course to philosophy run by the OU (A222). Cottingham's introductions are invaluable in providing the first time reader of important and sometimes quite old texts. The best refernence book I have found.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have, 11 Feb 2012
This review is from: Western Philosophy: An Anthology (Blackwell Philosophy Anthologies) (Paperback)
This text is perfect for anyone starting out in Philosophy or anyone who is or has already studied. What Cottingham has done is put together a range of subjects and different Philosophers views on these "problems"
As with any Philosophical text - this is only a starting point, further research and reading would be need to counter argue or develop your own views. But this text does give the main Philosophers and their theories over many different subjects.

The two most useful introductions to philosophy I possess are Bertrand Russell's, History of Western Philosophy, and Cottingham's, Western Philosophy. An Anthology. No undergraduate taking an introductory course should be without them. I see them as a classic and a classic waiting time to justify this accolade.

I decided to start on 'the self and freedom' and I'm loving it. I wish I could read the book a bit more often but the LLB degree that I'm working towards has a heavy workload.
I really recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great collection of important philosophers, 14 Oct 2011
This review is from: Western Philosophy: An Anthology (Blackwell Philosophy Anthologies) (Paperback)
This is a great collection of western philosophers - with helpful introductions that summarises each section. Some of it is heavy reading - but then it is philosophy!
Great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be without this book!, 25 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Western Philosophy: An Anthology (Blackwell Philosophy Anthologies) (Paperback)
This book is the recommended set book for A222 Exploring Philosophy at Open University. With over 800 pages, Western Philosophy is a huge subject. It is recommended for the beginner in philosophy to the the more advanced in the subject. This second edition includes two new sections on logic and language, as well as philosophy and the meaning of life. Cottingham has compiled a great number of extracts from many philosophical works including Dialogues concerning Natural Religion Enquiry concerning Human Understanding and A Treatise of Human nature by David Hume, Summa Theologiae by Thomas Aquinas, Utilitarianism and Liberty by John Stuart Mill, Reasons and Persons by the British contemporary philosopher Derek Parfit,'Science and 'Falsifiability, an extract from Conjectures and Refutations by Karl Popper, Principals of Morals and Legislation by Jeremy Bentham, and An Essay concerning Human Understanding by John Locke, 'New Foundations for Knowledge from Meditations by Rene Descartes. It is unacceptable to exclude works by Plato, Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, and so on. However, space does not afford me the opportunity to list them all here. As with most books on philosophy it requires utmost concentration. Readers interested in philosophy should not be without this book for future reference regardless of what stage has been reached in formal study. Reasonably priced and highly recommended.
