This book is really for anyone wanting to make a substantial and permanent positive change in their life, whether that change is driven by weight loss, illness, family or the desire to achieve your wildest dreams. If the last one seems hokey to you, just read about Chris' own phenomenal story and the real-life example of SparkPeople members that are scattered throughout this book and prepare to be inspired!
There are two things that had a profound impact for me. The first is what Chris refers to as the "crisscross" effect. The Spark teaches us about four cornerstones: Focus, Fitness, Fire and Positive Force. All too often, we tend to focus on one area of our life not realizing how tightly intertwined these cornerstones are. Chris shows us that as we improve one area of our life, it profoundly and positively impacts other areas of our life in ways we never thought possible. It's powerful and eye-opening stuff. The second is how small steps make a big impact on long-term goals. When we finally realize that nothing happens overnight and start setting attainable short-term goals, only then will we set ourselves on a successful path for meeting our long-term objectives. This was personally hard for me to accept, but once I did, the progress was extraordinary.
Finally, what makes SparkPeople.com so compelling is the incredible community that Chris and his team have built and nurtured for years. There are millions of members from all over the world coming together to offer encouragement, motivation and support for one another as they work towards achieving their goals. Spend some time on the site and you'll be amazed at both the positive encouragement and the complete absence of negativity. I love that Chris' main motivation in life is still helping others, even after achieving so much personal success. It's been his mantra since overcoming his own personal obstacles, and the man practices what he preaches - since founding SparkPeople, he has posted over 10,000 personal messages offering encouragement, support and congratulations to this vibrant community - WOW!

This review is from: The Spark: The 28-Day Breakthrough Plan for Losing Weight, Getting Fit, and Transforming Your Life (Paperback)This is a good book and the diet is not so mucha diet but a way of life. It is simple in its outlook and detailed so that anyone can follow it. It takes you through all the different stages and explains barriers that you could come up against and how to overcome them. No foods are banned but I will mention that later. It practices what it preaches in that there is a web site which is even more detailed; however, that is only for those who find it difficult to lose on their own, or want to make new friends via their social networking teams.
The book is really good and is an asset.
I come backto the recipes. These detail some great food, but is American and the author has not done research to convert certain ingredients to their British equivalent. some of the things do not exist in the UK. Also, there is one point where it mentions a $. Detail such as not changing this to read £ is not picking, but with the competiton around in this industry they are points which could put people off buyiong the book, and that would be a shame. This is the reason I have not given it a 5 star rating.
The nearest I have come to this type of regimen is from Paul McKenna in his I Can MakeYou Thin book. They are very alike in many areas, but Paul McKenna will get more sales simply because the book is pure English and he is more well known; something the author has to contend with.
Overall it is a well produced book and worth the money providing oyu plan to actually put into practice what the book says. It is not for general reading or for those who want to 'play' at losing weight. This is a book that not only loses you weight but helps get you fit and motivated to continue a lifestyle change without doing too much different.
As a disabled person I find the book very informative, and am able to follow the regimen quite easily. However, I recommend using it in conjunction with the web site.

It is motivational, it is life changing.
With the book you get one month of bonus training on the site. You get great ideas for improving your life, for exercise and some healthy recipes. You will love it.

Certain things in regard to losing weight and maintaining the loss exist - however most people are unsure what these "things" actually are...
Some of these things are processes - the how to and some of these things are people...
Some of these things are resources and some of these things are so simple that we overlook them...
Anyway, you can find all this information and more inside this book. You also have probably the best online free resource for weight loss that exists on the Internet right now - called funnily enough Sparkpeople.
It's quite American - the book and the website and there's also people from the uk using the website to help themselves and others lose weight. My friend called it Facebook for the bigger person which is a bit unfair but did make me laugh.
All the recipes in the book have American measurements but it's so simple to buy American measuring cups via google or amazon it's not an issue anymore - only an issue if you like moaning instead of getting better - I like getting better.

And the book covers all these F's in more detail. I remember 4 F's from my misspent youth - Fridays = fighting, flirting and Fun... Anyway, really good way of creating the motivation or "Spark" to get into the mood for part 2.
Part 2 covers the four part diet - Chris must like fours....

My take on diets is... All diets work - what doesn't work is us...
Where Spark works amazingly well is the online website and groups of people. There's loads of advertising on the site and that's part of the business model to help keep it free - so don't drive yourself mad or be put off by that because if you currently have a weight issue - you need to learn to live with advertising and learn control.
Advertising works, media works and fortunately or unfortunately it's here to stay.
You can learn how to eat wonderfully and lose weight - Sparkpeople has a fantastic online tracker - which is one of the best predictors of success - write before you bite...
Anyway, great book, even better website and I blog there every day. Nice...

The book is a helpful addition to the tools found on the site and serves as a brilliant motivator. So far, so good, it seems to be working - my enthusiasm for exercise has vastly improved with attainable goals being set. Tracking nutrition is a real eye opener and has really helped to improve my diet and portion size.
Motivational book, if you read in conjunction with the website tools, then you should be on a good path to a healthier you!
