This review is from: Superman Adventures: The Man of Steel TP (Paperback)
This volume contains stories reprinted from the comic books ‘Superman & Batman Magazine’ #1, #3, #5 & #7; ‘Superman Adventures’ #17, #18, #40 & #41; and ‘Justice League Unlimited’ #34. They are excellent adventure stories for younger readers who are interested in the exploits of Superman and his supporting cast of characters. The style of the artwork varies quite widely, due to the dates that the stories are drawn from – 1993-1996, 1998, 2000, & 2007 – but they are uniformly excellent in terms of both artwork and scripting, and encompass a wide range of subjects – all of which are action and adventure-based, with very little violence: the only punching is of robots, falling rocks and the walls of the villains’ lairs. There are explosions, fires, giant robots, runaway fairground rides, and the occasional villain, but these are definitely child-friendly stories, though still suitable for grown-ups too.

The Origin of Superman – 6pp – narrated by Lois Lane
Superman vs. the Mechanical Monsters – 6pp – Superman rescues Jimmy Olsen from Mad Scientist Professor Killgrave
All Mx’d Up – 6pp – Clark Kent and Lois lane visit a funfair, where they are joined by Mr Mxyzptlk…
The Doomsday Solution – 6pp – Superman recounts one of his nightmares to some kids
Superman’s Pal’s Pal – 22pp – Jimmy is threatened by the arrival of a new intern at the Daily Planet, so he decides to take him on assignment to get a picture of Superman in action – which gets them both into the middle of a battle with a super-villain and his heavily armed flying saucer…
It’s a Super Life – 22pp – Clark Kent starts to worry that he’s not really a proper reporter, as he’s always dashing of to be Superman, but his parents and friends help to show him that Clark can make a difference to peoples’ lives just as much a Superman.
Old Wounds – 22pp - Mr Mxyzptlk plays a trick on Superman by bringing his childhood pet dog through time from Krypton to modern Metropolis. Superman doesn’t realise that he is really the real Krypto and not just another one of Mxy’s tricks…
Phantoms – 20pp – Superman is trapped in the Phantom Zone, thanks to the trickery of an old annoyance – so the Justice League must go in and rescue him…
There are also fifteen brilliant one-page stories, featuring a wide range of the supporting cast, to round out the collection.
