This review is from: Demon Knights Volume 2: The Avalon Trap TP (The New 52) (Paperback)
The story running through issues #8-12 of DC Comics’ ‘New 52’ title Demon Knights is collected, along with issue #0, as Demon Knights Volume 2: The Avalon Trap TP (The New 52). This is a very entertaining story, with excellent scripting and spectacular artwork, as we get a ‘Magnificent Seven’ of DC Comics old fantasy characters given a new start in the world of the New 52. The seven soldiers of magic and mysticism are Jason Blood / Etrigan the Demon, Madame Xanadu, Sir Ystin (the Shining Knight), Vandal Savage, and newcomers Exoristos (an exiled Amazon), Al Jabr (a ‘scientist’ from al Andalus) and the Horsewoman, a mysterious, err… horsewoman and expert archer. This is an excellent mix of unreal history, DC Universe mysticism and magic, and superb scripting, artwork and characterisation. We even get to learn Madame Xanadu’s ‘real’ name, the final fate of King Arthur, and the secret origin of Etrigan the Demon.

THE SPOILER ZONE
This story, continuing on from the previous volume, sees the team given a quest to resurrect Merlin, who was murdered shortly before their arrival in the city of Alba Sarum. To do this, they must journey to Avalon, and back. The only known entrance is to be found near Camelot – the most recent one… (Camelot is a cyclical thing, it appears). The island of Britain is overrun with monsters, following the fall of Camelot, including a Pirate sea-serpent - Nosy Molly – so there is much hacking, stabbing and searing of hellfire before they team reach the site of Camelot, and the mystery villain of the piece is unveiled. I refer you to the title of the collection for more information…

Issue #0 is the ‘secret origin’ of Etrigan the Demon, telling a little about his time in Hell, Jason of Norwich’s apprenticeship to Merlin, and how the two came to meet. I had also forgotten about Merlin’s parentage until I read this…

Pretty good, nice artwork. Jumps around nicely. Would like more about the other characters and not just focused on the two "leads" but I am sure that will happen eventually.

Always loved Etrigan the rhyming Demon....just the thought makes me laugh.
Always love good artwork and good characters, this has both.
The art has been fairly good but it seems to lapse near the end of each issue.
If you enjoy the demon in a medieval setting, this ones for you, I'm still deciding if I prefer him in a modern setting, with a purpose.
