5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic return
I've never been the greatest fan of Supergirl but her introduction (or return if you want to look at it that way) is very well done here.

The art work is truely fantastic is places and the character interaction, namely Batman's annoyance at Superman's trustworthy nature, keeps you gripped. Superman comparing Kara to Nightwing and Robin also leads to some good dialouge...

1.0 out of 5 stars No story, distorted art
Michael Turner made his name drawing Witchblade back in the days when Sara Pezzini would end up near naked all the time. Hence he draws women in an airbrushed pinup style that is completely divorced from reality. His men look like boy band members. And he cannot direct action. He also draws the single worst rendition of Darkseid I ever saw. It's not that it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic return, 21 Mar 2005

I've never been the greatest fan of Supergirl but her introduction (or return if you want to look at it that way) is very well done here.

The art work is truely fantastic is places and the character interaction, namely Batman's annoyance at Superman's trustworthy nature, keeps you gripped. Superman comparing Kara to Nightwing and Robin also leads to some good dialouge between Batman, Superman and Diana. Wonder Woman's inclusion is timely and not just a token gesture I'd feared it may be(although the nature of her entrance is confusing at first).

Darkseid returns and is tremendously evil as ever which eventually provokes a great reaction from Superman. The addition of Doomsday proved to be a quick anti-climax but ultimately was essential to the story line.

There are a few continuity issues (mainly with the Death of Superman series) but none are very obivous and the story is a great follow on from 'Public Enemies'. All in all, totally worth the money.

I've always been a fan of Supergirl since I strated reading the Superman comics in 1992. The artwork in this book is excellent and some of the best I've seen for a long time.

The book features some of the biggest names in the DC Universe (both Good and Evil) But also recalls some of the deaths in the 'family'. Of course this is the original Supergirl not the Supergirl who features in the present DC Comics.

The ending was shocking and then twisted but I'd like to see a sequel.

This review is from: Superman Batman TP Vol 02 Supergirl (Superman/Batman: Supergirl) (Paperback)
Beautifully illustrated to match the story, I'm not going to go into heavy details about the book, you can read the other reviews about that. What i will say is, buy this book, if not for the action packed, Emotional story, then buy it for the art. You will not be disappointed.

I picked this up a few years ago and was so blown away that it got me back into comics. Why? I think this is the first DC book I read that really seemed to 'get' the characters of Superman and Batman spot on. Their conflicting opinions (narrated beautifully throughout and in a manner that contrasts the characters so well) keep the book alive and are weaved together in a manner almost poetic. It really shows that Batman and Superman are two sides of the same coin and you do begin to feel that, when they're working together, there's nothing that can stop them. The story is well plotted and even a 'tour-de-force' of the DC universe doesn't feel trite or contrived. The artwork is simply stunning too, and my personal favourite work of the now deceased Michael Turner - I am desperate for an absolute edition of this to really celebrate that man's talent.

Jeph Loeb weaves all this together seamlessly and then treats us to Superman enraged - and convincingly so (not in a manner where it seems unjustified as so many writers seem to have done). Here it's fully justified and you do find yourself thinking 'I'm glad he's on our side.'

Quality through and through - it does make me wish Loeb would do another run on these characters - it all feels so fresh. Take note DC - this is the Superman and Batman we want to see in new movies (Nolan's Batman may be excellent but Supes just won't work in that universe) - Loeb's got them just right and Turner makes it all beautiful. - Sorry to gush - but I really do rate this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Supergirl returns, 20 Feb 2010
This review is from: Superman Batman TP Vol 02 Supergirl (Superman/Batman: Supergirl) (Paperback)
This is a great title, with a flowing story and great art by the late Michael Turner that chronicles the appearance of a Kryptonian girl who Superman immediately identifies as his cousin. Batman of course, is suspicious of her and Superman becomes violently protective of her, but there are factions who want her for their own purposes.

While the story is about Supergirl and her reintroduction to the DC universe, the real highlight of the Superman/Batman series is the monologuing of the two characters, where Superman is compassionate, thoughtful of others and criticising Batman for being so distrustful, Batman is perpetually suspicious of everything and criticises Superman for being so trusting and naive and the way they often come to the same conclusions from their different points of view is really interesting to read.

Michael Turner's art is fantastic in this title, there are cameos from a variety of DC characters and the mystery and suspense is balanced perfectly with the action. This is good for Superman/Batman fans, and of course Supergirl fans who want to see the debut of the newest incarnation of the character.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERGIRL HAS NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD!, 1 May 2005
With the writing force of Jeph Loeb behind any comic-book story, he can do no wrong. If their is one writer that can get under the skin of any superhero, and bring it to the reader so realistically, he can. And he continues that trend here, when Superman and Batman meet Kara Zor-El (Supergirl). Superman naturally takes to his cousin, who after escaping the doomed planet of Krypton, lands in Gotham City. Batman, however, is not so obliging. His natural instinct is that her intentions are sinister, yet still helps his friend to protect her.
With the inclusion of Wonder Woman wanting Kara to join her Amazonian tribe, it's only a matter of time until evil rears its' ugly head. Superman once again comes up against his deadliest foe, Doomsday. But behind it all is the equally deadly Darkseid. He sees Supergirl as an asset for his army of Furies on Apokolips, and he exploits her vulnerabilities after kidnapping her following an army of Doomsday's attack on the Amazonian island of Themyscira. The trinity of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, along with a former resident of Apokolips, Barda, set out to rescue her. If their was a superhero that stared death in the face, it's Batman, as he goes one on one with Darkseid. A battle that almost costs him his life, he reasons with the behemoth to release Kara. He does so reluctantly, but only for a short while...
Along with some surprising twists and turns, the artwork by Michael Turner and Peter Steigerwald is simply stunning, readers will not take their eyes off it. Supergirl is created with a wide-eyed innocence, and at the same time is on a personal voyage of self-discovery. Superman almost smothers Kara with his fatherly attentions, vowing to never let her get in harms way. Batman is the embodiment of the lone crusader with his bravery nd personal sacrifice, plus Kara bringing back painful memories of Jason Todd, gives him cause to help his greatest of allies. If you were fans of 'Trinity', then you will enjoy this adventure all the more.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Superman/Batman story by far!!!!!!!!!, 12 Dec 2005

This review is from: Superman Batman TP Vol 02 Supergirl (Superman/Batman: Supergirl) (Paperback)
this book collects the fantastic supergirl story arc from the popular comic book series superman/batman. this a story follows on from the first book collection but it is not essential reading to understand this story line. the main thing about this book is the fantastic art work and the super sharp script delivered by jeph loeb is brilliant, however this book has the best picture of batman to feature in any comic book, when he rises from the water in gotham harbour at the start of the story. The artist Micheal Turner does a fantastic job, giving new life into these very well known charcters, you should simply buy this just for the art work alone because it is brilliant and would be a worthy peice in any ones collection because it is not often that you get a story line that has brilliant art coupled with a great story line like this one which also adds new charcters into the superman mthos with the welcome return of supergirl, which means we all get to see Batmans unwillinness to trust that this could actually be supermans long lost cousin, but it's just great to see the worlds greatest super heroes at odds end with each other over the new arrival. also the big battle scenes towards the end look amazing with superman, batman and wonderwoman and the rest of the amazons fighting agianst an army of domesdays.

It's not that it isn't without its attractions, it's just not very good.

Meanwhile Jeph Loeb writes a story that is less logical than his screenplay for Commando. While there is precious little cleverness in this (Supergirl lands on Earth. Superman is happy to meet another survivor of Krypton, Batman is wary of her. Darkseid attacks because he wants the new Supergirl to join his Female Furies. That is the whole of the plot.) or in the dialogue (which is minimal and gives little sense of character, it is an important event in the DC Universe. Until recently the current incarnation of Superman was the only survivor of Krypton, and one would expect the arrival of his cousin (if she really is) to be epic. As it is, it's flat. For someone who has learnt that she is one of only two survivors of an entire planet and that all her family is dead, Kara takes it very well.

Part of me wants to like this. A lot. But I can't. If you like pinup art (images that on their own look "cool" but do not make good storytelling), you may well enjoy this. It's style over content, like a Hollywood blockbuster.
