4.0 out of 5 stars Complex but compelling, 31 Oct 2010
This review is from: The Quantum and the Lotus: A Journey to the Frontiers Where Science and Buddhism Meet (Paperback)
Both of the subjects covered in this book are difficult to relate to everyday experience, so be prepared for a challenge - it is not light reading. It is well written though and compelling. If you have an interest in either of these subjects but know little about them, give it a go.

This is truly the most fascinating book ever read. It brings so much information and generates so many questions. The reader simply delights in the exploration of connections between science and the teachings of Buddhism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buddhism and science, 5 Mar 2013

This review is from: The Quantum and the Lotus: A Journey to the Frontiers Where Science and Buddhism Meet (Paperback)
This is the best book I've come across on this subject. The authors are a Vietnamese scientist brought up amidst Buddhism, and a Buddhist monk with a great interest in science and a deep knowledge of Buddhism. For me it says science is a useful tool but for it to effect us in a deeply meaningful way, it needs a compassionate heart . The book also makes the point that Buddha's teachings are scientific and many of what we think of as modern discoveries were known to the ancients. As Geshe Kelsang Gyatso says in Modern Buddhism (free to download) "The instructions given in this book are scientific methods for improving our human nature and qualities through developing the capacity of our mind." And as Einstein said (quoted in the Quantum and the Lotus) If there is any religion that could respond to the need of modern science, it would be Buddhism."

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, 1 April 2013

If you like science and are interested in Buddhism this book is exceptional. It explains the more complex aspects of Buddhist philosophy with modern scientific illustrations. Matthieu Ricard has the happy knack of presenting eastern philosophical themes in a very accessible way for the western reader.

I am still in the process of reading this book and so far have found it fascinating and thought provoking. I like the format of a conversation between two experts on the subjects. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to get to grips with these difficult ideas.

Unlike certain other faiths in the world today, Buddhism has a close affinity with the findings of science. This is not to suggest that Buddha knew about Relativity or Quantum Mechanics, but that his teachings were inspired by intuition about how the universe works. This is an excellent book, if a little hard going at times, but well worth the effort to follow its course as the physicist and the monk discuss their different approaches to arrive art the same conclusions. Highly recommended.

This book is a good analysis of science and how Buddhism looks at it. It doesn't contradict with science in anyway instead it flows along with it. It's a must read book if you like a good brain teaser. The book it self is easy to understand as its simply a conversation going between a Buddhist monk and a scientist.

I was recommended this book by a friend and decided to give it to my son-in-law for C'mas. He has promised to circulate it around the family when he's finished, so watch this space!
