4.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what it says on the tin
Right from the get go we are thrown into a typical Dickian surreality. The first couple of chapters get us right into the meat of the storyline with the usual directness that avid readers of Dick have come to know and love. What follows is, perhaps, a more easily accessible novel compared to other more cerebral works of the prolific and immensely talented master of the...

3.0 out of 5 stars not his best
Do bear in mind that this is really two stories rather awkwardly stitched together - one a pretty straightforward, enjoyable and innovative story, the other a strange and tangled tangent that approaches stream of consciousness at some points and jars with the story into the middle of which it is dropped. The two were written years apart and it shows. This is worth buying...

Right from the get go we are thrown into a typical Dickian surreality. The first couple of chapters get us right into the meat of the storyline with the usual directness that avid readers of Dick have come to know and love. What follows is, perhaps, a more easily accessible novel compared to other more cerebral works of the prolific and immensely talented master of the genre.
I won't bore you with the details of the plot as the beauty of Dick is that it the sheer believable yet quite obviously wrong worlds that Dick transports you to is where the real heart of the book. The characters have the usual facets of humanity and inhumanity that he often employs that leaves them somewhat thin but always sympathetic.
This more storyline driven work is by dint of the fact that is less thought- provoking, perhaps not one of his best. Nevertheless, the short length, the incomparible wit and the profound eccentricity of the man make this a must have for existing fans and a great book for the uninitiated to try before moving on to the hard stuff!
