The book relates the three week journey from near Lakenheath to Peterborough. The daily lives and journey details give a great sense of how the countryside was at that time. The story is told by three different members of the party and each is slightly different as each person has a different perspective of events. I found the third to be best. It is especially fascinating if you follow the route using the Cassini historical maps numbered 142 and 143, as modern maps do not show the same detail, in particular the three meres which no longer exist.
