5.0 out of 5 stars Useful when wanting to escape for a day., 7 Jun 2012
This review is from: Frommer's Best Day Trips from London (Frommer's Color Complete) (Paperback)
Frommer's guides are always attractive to look at and wonderfully concise- and this is no exception. The selection of suggested day trips is balanced and sensible for the London resident (although until I read in the guide that you could get there by train in two hours, I had thought that York was a little too far for a day trip). There are some original suggestions such as Whitstable and East Bergholt alongside the more obvious visitor attractions such as Brighton and Leeds Castle. Each section has useful and clear information about travel, eateries and key sites of interest as well as realistic walks. Nearby attractions are mentioned too, so this could serve well for a weekend visitor as well as a day tripper.

Great features of the book include the "Best of" summaries and the "at a glance" page which helps you decide where to go according to the place's features. So, if you want a charming village with walks and a cathedral, then Chichester is the place according to the guide. Also there are great maps, a calendar of events and comprehensive advice on travelling from London (although this is more useful to visiting foreign travellers rather than London residents who probably already know about road speed limits and oyster cards). The photographs throughout are superb and really make the book a pleasure to flick through.

This book would be a great present for a friend living in London or for someone staying there for several weeks.

This review is from: Frommer's Best Day Trips from London (Frommer's Color Complete) (Paperback)
Reading this guide book is a pleasure; there are so many fascinating, historical towns and buildings to see and so many fun and unique activities to do from your home base of London.

Want to enjoy the charms of a church so old it was considered 'ancient' in 1120? Go to Bradford on Avon. Want to try your luck in a giant maze? Visit Leeds Castle. Have you daydreamed of punting lazily down a river? Cambridge is only 45 minutes from King's Cross. Prefer to visit a market that's been in operation since the 13th century? Salisbury also has the country's tallest cathedral.

Each page has destinations more wonderful than the last, with valuable transit information, hours of operation, prices, and details every visitor needs to know. There are many colour photos and helpful maps and the book is small enough to carry. It's a must if you're staying in London and want to explore the picturesque countryside. Highly recommended.
